| Dear Reader, Tart cherry juice is already being celebrated by Nutrition & Healing readers as an extremely effective remedy for gout. So effective that it's even struck fear in the hearts of the mainstream.
In fact, Big Pharma was so distressed over cherries that they released the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hounds. Two years ago, Michigan cherry farmers were hit with a deluge of letters warning them to shut up about the health benefits of the fruit.
But we don't scare so easily — and we're going to keep on singing the praises of this humble and delicious fruit.
Which brings us to one of its other benefits: getting that good night's sleep.
A study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, shows that two daily glasses of tart cherry juice could keep you asleep longer and leave you feeling more rested.
Participants in the study drank a glass of 100 per cent pure Montmorency cherry juice or a non-cherry fruit cocktail twice a day — when they woke up and right before bed.
Those who drank the cherry juice enjoyed significant improvements in sleep including longer sleep time (about 40 more minutes a night!), less need for naps, and increased "overall sleep efficiency," which is basically the ratio of the time you're in bed to the time you're actually asleep.
The researchers linked the sleep benefits to the melatonin that's in the cherries. Each serving of juice contains the nutrients of 90 to 100 tart cherries, meaning it packs a powerful melatonin punch!
Considering we spend about $84 million on sleep aids every year in this country, it's nice to know a little help can be had naturally — without having to resort to that homey but harmful warm milk!

Q: I read in your online archive about administering by injection 2,000 micrograms of vitamin B12 every day for relief of bursitis. What would be the equivalent amount of the methylcobalamin form of B12, taken under the tongue?
Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: If your body adequately absorbs methylcobalamin under the tongue (referred to as sublingually), 3,000 to 4,000 micrograms daily will very likely do the job. (Methylcobalamin is just one of many forms of vitamin B12.) But since sublingual absorption is highly variable — and in some cases can even be as low as zero — it's better to take it intravenously. If you're not comfortable with the injectable form, your next-best option is the liposomal form. If you decide to go this route, make sure you also supplement with folate. Research indicates it's always wisest to take folate with B12. Always work with a doctor that is skilled in alternative medicine, especially if you decide to take B12 intravenously.
