From Marcia Purse, your Guide to Bipolar Disorder
In her address at the 2010 conference of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Kay Redfield Jamison said that lithium is prescribed less than it should be because it's inexpensive, and all too often drug companies are still paying kickbacks to doctors for prescribing their more expensive mood stabilizers. If she's right, it's a shame, as lithium has been shown to work well for both mania and depression. And if you or someone you care about is taking lithium, it is essential to be aware of potential problems.

Lithium Toxicity
The window between the therapeutic dose of lithium and the toxic dose is almost vanishingly small. This means it's vital to know the symptoms of lithium poisoning and to make sure you're being tested regularly. Read more...

About Allergies: Can People Be Allergic to Money?

From Daniel More, MD, your Guide to Allergies
I'm sure you heard that old superstition about when you have itchy palms, you will soon receive some money. While this superstition is most likely false, some people actually have itchy palms after handling money. It is actually possible to be allergic to money -- not the act of making it -- but from coming into contact with the physical form. People can be allergic to both coins, typically as a result of the nickel contained in certain denominations of United States and Euro coins, as well as to paper bills, as a result of the ink in printing. Certain rashes are also seen on the hands of people who count large numbers of paper bills, such as bank tellers. Find out more about the different forms of money allergy, including how to avoid and treat this type of allergy.

Allergic to Money
Could you imagine being allergic to money? It sounds like a great excuse for not being able to find a job, being in debt or maybe even the reason why you can't repay your friend the $50 you owe him. To most people, having an allergy to money seems nothing more than an excuse - and a bad one at that. Like something your teenage son would say when you asked him to mow the lawn to earn his allowance, right? But what if a person were actually allergic to money? Not the act of making money (hard work), but the physical form of money - coins or paper bills?

Nickel Allergy
Nickel allergy is the most common form of allergic contact dermatitis. People who have nickel allergy often notice a dry or blistering itchy skin rash at the site of contact with various jewelry or other metallic items. For example, nickel allergy often causes itchy rashes on the earlobes from earrings, the neckline from a necklace, the wrist from a bracelet or wristwatch, or near the umbilicus ("belly-button") from a belt buckle or jeans rivet. More recently, there have been reports of cell phones causing facial rashes as a result of nickel allergy.

Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is an itchy, blistering skin rash typically caused by the direct contact of a substance with the skin. There are 2 types of contact dermatitis: irritant and allergic. This difference is often difficult to tell apart, and is not usually an important distinction to make. Contact dermatitis results in 5.7 million doctor visits each year in the United States, and all ages are affected. Females are slightly more commonly affected than males, and teenagers and middle-aged adults seems to be the most common age groups affected.

UK Edition

Dear Reader,

Should that extra large bucket of crispy chicken from KFC be relabelled "bucket o' birth control"? What about Big Mac burgers?

Every one of those foods could be contributing to reduced fertility, according to a new study by Harvard researchers.

It turns out that healthy young men who eat a lot of junk food aren't just wrecking their hearts and waistlines with all that trans fat — they could also be wrecking their chances of becoming fathers.

The researchers analysed sperm from men between the ages of 18 and 22. These men were determined to be in very good health without any other problems that might affect their fertility. Over the course of a few months, the men tracked their diets using food journals.

It was found that men whose diets were heavy in junk food produced sperm that weren't as likely to survive the trip to the egg as those produced by men who ate healthy diets. And this was regardless of whether the men were healthy and exercised.

The men who ate the highest levels of trans fat had the worst quality sperm. In contrast, the men that ate healthy diets — including lots of whole grains, vegetables, and fish — had the best quality sperm.

This study goes hand-in-hand with another recent one out of Japan. That one showed that men who exercise moderately on a regular basis have more viable sperm than men who only exercise lightly.

If you know someone who is getting ready to start a family, here's the message for him: get off the couch and cook yourself a healthy balanced meal!

Wonder vitamin beats bruising and clotting

Q: Sometimes it seems like I would bruise if a feather touched my skin. I also experience heavy menstrual clotting. Could the two be related?

Dr Jonathan V. Wright: In the early 1970s, I worked with a woman who struggled with similar problems — she bruised more easily than nearly anyone she knew.

Even back then, it was widely known that one of vitamin K's major functions is to stop easy bruising. But she'd had her levels measured at the hospital where she worked, and was told it was "very close to normal," so that couldn't be her problem. I advised her to try flavonoids, which can also stop easy bruising by strengthening blood vessels, including tiny capillaries, so they don't break as easily.

Two or three months later, she reported that her "easy bruising" was a little better, but not that much. With no other remedies available, I advised her to take a larger-than-usual quantity of vitamin K1, 5 milligrams daily. (At that time, the only supplemental forms of vitamin K available were vitamin K1, phylloquinone, and vitamin K3, a semi-synthetic form.)

I didn't see her for at least another six months, when she came back about another concern. When we were done discussing that, she noted that her "easy bruising" was entirely gone, and she'd noticed one other unexpected benefit...

Her menstrual clotting — which had been extremely heavy since she'd started her menstrual periods over 20 years before — had entirely gone away. She said: "My clotting with periods had been so heavy that sometimes I missed school or work because of pain." She just hadn't mentioned it before because, she said, "I thought it was just normal for me. Besides, a few other women I know have the problem, too."

After starting vitamin K, her first menstrual period was "about the same," but her second menstrual period had somewhat smaller clots and fewer of them, her third had even fewer clots, which were, again, much smaller. By her fourth period after starting vitamin K, the clots were almost gone, and after that, they were entirely gone.

Neither of us could explain it, since the nursing and medical textbooks of the time said (as they do today) that the principal function of vitamin K is enabling blood to clot normally (without it, there's too much easy bleeding). Yet vitamin K had not only helped take away her easy bruising, but also her menstrual clotting.

Since that time, every (yes, every) woman I've worked with who's taken vitamin K for her menstrual clotting has gotten rid of the problem within a few cycles. And even though there's no official explanation for it in medical textbooks, it appears that menstrual clotting is — for these women, at least — a symptom of not enough vitamin K.

From Paige Waehner, your Guide to Exercise

One of the most depressing things about weight loss is this: You can't choose where you lose the weight. Yes, you can focus every ounce of your will on those love handles or saddlebags, but your body has no interest in your wants and needs. It's job? To follow the directions radioed in from your DNA (among other things), telling it what to keep and what to get rid of.

In fact, it's entirely possible your body will remove fat from areas you care nothing about (your wrists, for example) leaving the worst parts there.

This may seem depressing at first, but once you realize your body is in charge, you can actually relax into your program and focus on what you can control - Moving more, eating well and taking care of yourself. Freedom...it's a beautiful thing.
