UK Edition

Dear Reader,

Researchers just dealt another blow to the little blue bedroom booster...

A study in a recent issue of the Archives of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery shows that using Viagra may lead to long-term hearing loss.

The study came in response to reports regarding sudden hearing loss among users of Viagra and other similar drugs, and the American Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) decision to label Viagra with more prominent warnings about hearing loss risk.

US researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham analyzed data from more than 11,500 men over the age of 40. And what they found is pretty serious — men taking Viagra and other drugs that work in similar ways had twice the risk for developing hearing loss as men who weren't taking the drugs.

That's right — taking Viagra DOUBLED the risk of losing their hearing. In fact, among men taking the drugs, almost one in three had hearing loss. Even after accounting for other factors, a strong link remained.

The researchers suspect it has to do with an increase of blood flow — the same reason it was harnessed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction after being developed as a blood pressure drug. They say increased blood flow to tissues in the ear could cause damage and, subsequently, hearing loss.

So what do you do? Pitting a problem that can have a serious effect on your quality of life against a potential side effect that could also have a detrimental impact on your quality of life results in some pretty tough decision-making.

It's a decision you might not even have to consider, though. There are some potent natural options out there, and Dr. Wright has covered a few of them in Nutrition & Healing over the years.

For example, increasing your levels of L-arginine or supplementing with choline (1,000-3,000 mg) and vitamin B5 (500-1,500 mg) could do the trick.

Treat prostatitis without antibiotics

Q: My doctor prescribed antibiotics to treat my prostatitis. I took the full course, but I haven't noticed any difference. Why does it seem like they didn't work? Is there something else I should try?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: The reason the antibiotics your doctor prescribed didn't have an effect on your condition is that in cases of chronic prostatitis (also known as chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome, or CP/CPPS), bacteria are hardly ever involved. Even on the rare occasion that bacteria are involved, the prostate gland is notoriously difficult to treat with antibiotics.

When it comes right down to it, no conventional treatments are effective for CP/CPPS because no one knows for sure what causes it. But while no one really knows the exact cause of CP/CPPS, many relevant factors have been identified that could all contribute to the problem.

My patients say that prolonged sitting or riding a bicycle can make it worse, which suggests that poor circulation to the prostate is a probable factor. Many also complain that their pain flares up when they drink alcohol. Published research indicates that an autoimmune reaction could be a big factor in the chronic inflammation that accompanies this condition. And stress is also a likely culprit.

The good news is, there are natural treatments you can try that can help combat these potential factors. My colleague and regular Nutrition & Healing columnist herbalist Kerry Bone tells me that his patients have had great success with various herbs. Some of the herbs he's found most effective are saw palmetto (to improve the overall health of the prostate), Echinacea (as a general immune-booster), nettle root (for additional prostate support), cramp bark and chamomile (for painful spasms), and the Ayurvedic herb Crataeva (to improve bladder function).

It seems like a lengthy list, but it's unlikely you would need to take all of these herbs. You should work with a doctor skilled and knowledgeable in natural medicine to find the specific combinations and dosages that work best for you.

  1. ProSolution Gel formula includes L-Arginine, a critical amino acid that the body utilizes to produce nitric oxide, which dilates the blood vessels to allow more blood to flow into the penis for a stronger erection and improved orgasm. https://www.penetric
