| 23 November 2010 UK Edition | Dear Reader, They're supposed to strengthen bones. But like some cruel cosmic joke, it turns out that for some people they do just the opposite. I'm talking about a class of osteoporosis medications called bisphosphonates — Boniva, Fosamax, and Actonel are a few of the drugs that promise to strengthen bones and keep you from succumbing to the devastating effects of osteoporosis. Late last year, Merck got a bit of a jolt when nearly 1,000 cases were brought against the drug giant — cases claiming that Fosamax had caused a condition in which bone tissue is starved of blood and begins to collapse. The solution to the bone necrosis risk was for patients to "pay attention to their pain." Of course, by the time you're experiencing the excruciating pain that comes with bone necrosis, it could be too late. Of course, the drugs are still out there. But now there's been more fuel added to the fire. Research from Oxford University's Cancer Epidemiology Unit shows that people who take bisphosphonates for osteoporosis may be at an increased risk for oesophageal cancer. Not just an increased risk, actually — the risk seems to be doubled with long-term use, defined as over five years of use or having 10 prescriptions written for the drugs. The report also found an increased risk for stomach and bowel cancer. And as far as the oesophagus goes, it's not just cancer — bisposphonates may also erode and inflame the lining of the oesophagus, and researchers also found evidence of oesophageal perforation with use of the drugs. Oesophageal cancer is relatively rare, but a doubled risk isn't a small matter. Of course, the response from the researchers is that people have to weigh risks versus benefits, but why go there? As Dr. Wright has covered many times in Nutrition & Healing, Mother Nature has some pretty strong offerings when it comes to preventing and treating osteoporosis — and none of them will give you reason to weigh the possibility of cancer against the health of your bones. What can I do? Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: While you may not be struggling with the typical sleep-onset variety that most people associate with the word "insomnia," your situation could be a subset of this condition — one called "sleep maintenance insomnia." A few years ago, my colleague and regular Nutrition & Healing columnist Kerry Bone shared an herbal remedy for this type of insomnia called chaste tree. Research shows that this herb can actually increase the body's own natural production of melatonin, which helps you have more restful, uninterrupted sleep. In one study, researchers examined melatonin secretion in 20 healthy males ages 20 to 32 after the intake of placebo or various doses (120 to 480 mg) of chaste tree extract for 14 days. The chaste tree caused a dose-dependent increase of melatonin secretion, especially during the night. Total melatonin output was approximately 60 per cent higher in the chaste tree group. They speculated that chaste tree may have value in the treatment of insomnia and jet lag. Since reading about this research, Kerry tells me that he's tried the chaste tree approach with his sleep-maintenance insomnia patients. So far, they've all reported back with good results.
