Dear Reader,

It's known as the world's most expensive spice (0.06 ounce- jars go for almost £20). It adds a beautiful yellow hue and delicious flavour to rice and other dishes.

I'm talking about saffron — extracted from the stigmas of crocus flowers and then dried. It's a must when making paella — and it could become essential to protecting your body from one of the more common cancers threatening our lives.

Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death in the world.

Among its other causes, liver cancer has been linked to DEN, an environmental carcinogen found in tobacco smoke, makeup, petrol, and processed foods.

Researchers working at the United Arab Emirates University decided to focus on DEN for a study that appeared in the September issue of the Journal of Hepatology. Previously, saffron has been shown to have antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. So, it seemed like a natural fit for their study.

The researchers used DEN to induce lesions in rats that mimic both benign and malignant tumours in humans. They then began a treatment with saffron.

And saffron seemed to do the job. They found that the spice reduced the number and incidence of tumours in the rats. In the rats that got the largest doses, cancer was actually completely inhibited. And those who received pre-treatment were protected from the development of cancer cells.

Overall, the researchers determined that saffron promotes cancer cell death and blocks cancer cells from spreading. They're conducting further studies now.

Of course, saffron is already available in nearly every supermarket. And there are saffron supplements already being sold to help elevate mood and relieve stress. No dosage information is yet available since saffron hasn't been studied in connection with liver cancer in humans, but I'll keep an eye out on further word. In the meantime, you can speak to a doctor skilled in natural medicine about the existing supplements.

For your brain — and so much more

Q: What are your dosing guidelines for fish oil, natural hormones, and lithium to prevent Alzheimer's disease?

Dr Jonathan V. Wright: Whether you're worried about Alzheimer's prevention or not, everyone should be taking at least 1 tablespoon daily of fish oil. Fish oil is Nature's own anti-inflammatory, and protecting your body — and your brain — from inflammation will help prevent any number of diseases, from cancer to heart disease to Alzheimer's. Plus, the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil help repair brain cell membranes.

The amounts of lithium I recommend for brain anti-ageing range from 10 to 20 milligrams (from lithium aspartate or lithium orotate) daily. Many of the studies done on lithium and cognitive function used higher doses, but I'm certainly not using those amounts myself, nor do I recommend it. Prescription quantities of lithium just aren't necessary for "everyday" brain cell protection and re-growth. Studies done years ago have shown that very low amounts of lithium can also measurably influence brain function for the better.

As far as bio-identical hormones are concerned, however, dosages are much more individualized. I suggest you work with a doctor knowledgeable about nutritional medicine who can help you determine what amounts might be best for you.
