Dear Reader,

It's a superstar of the anti-aging world. It can boost your brain and your eyes, and it's been shown to be a powerful cancer-fighter as well.

Imagine — all that in a delicious glass of wine.

Yes, I'm talking about resveratrol, the antioxidant powerhouse that convinced us all that wine isn't just good for the soul — it's good for the body, too (in moderation, of course).

And now there's more to the resveratrol story — so much more. Because it's not just an anti-aging supplement for adults — early doses of resveratrol could actually help ward off metabolic syndrome later in life.

That's right — giving resveratrol early in life could help save that child a future of the syndrome marked by insulin resistance, abdominal fat, and a greater risk of serious health issues including diabetes.

Researchers at the University of Alberta found that giving resveratrol to young offspring of lab rats after weaning prevented metabolic syndrome. They believe that infancy is a critical time in preventing future metabolic diseases — this study made great strides in supporting that belief.

The news is especially important for children who have trouble developing in the womb — those kids are at a greater risk of developing metabolic issues later.

Giving resveratrol allows, they say, for a kind of "reprogramming" in such children. Next up — a test of whether giving resveratrol to the mother during pregnancy can help protect against development of metabolic syndrome in her offspring (yes, we're talking about another rat study).

Writing for Nutrition & Healing, Kerry Bone has suggested that an effective long-term dose for resveratrol ranges anywhere from 30 to 110 mg per day. Of course, he was writing for adults. As always, it's best to work with a doctor skilled in natural medicine to determine the best doses for your family members.

As for me, I think I'll get my resveratrol the grown-up way: I'll be sure to enjoy a nice glass of red wine (but only one!) with my dinner tonight.

Q: I am having the hardest time getting my 5-year-old son to take the supplements his doctor has determined would be best for him. He says the liquid extracts "taste yucky." What can I do?

Dr Jonathan V. Wright: You've highlighted a big problem with giving children herbal supplements and extracts. I've found that most children can't swallow tablets or capsules whole until they're at least 9 or 10 years old. So that limits the options to liquid extracts, crushed tablets, or the powder contents emptied from capsules. Generally, none of them taste very good — and most children won't willingly swallow things that don't taste good!

But there are a few tricks you can use that will help, starting with mixing the herbal extract or supplement with some sort of natural sweetener. Some of the favourite "mixers" of my pint-sized patients include honey, all- natural fruit juice, juice concentrate, or pure maple syrup. Just add a dash of one of them to the extract or crushed supplement, and be sure to have more juice or water on hand as a "chaser."

When all else fails, the "jello technique" is a good fall- back. This involves mixing up a natural form of jello using fruit juice and agar powder (a natural gelling agent found in many natural food stores). Once the agar is dissolved into the juice, pour the mixture into the compartments of an ice cube tray, then add a single dose of the herbal extract to each cube. Put the tray into the refrigerator to set, and each time a dose is called for, give the child one jello cube.
