| After working in sex for over 23 years, and living for additional 17 where my "work" in sex was of a more amateur nature, I've just begun to grasp the catch-22 that is identity in our lives. Most of us crave and benefit from having an identity that we experience outside of ourselves, something we can relate to and feel connected to others through, a basic structure we can use to build our own experience. But identity is also a trap. It fools us into thinking that the differences between identities is greater than anything, particularly than the differences between individuals. And this is absolutely false. In this way identity can keep us apart from people who would otherwise be allies, friends, lovers, teachers and students. There's no answer to this problem, and as I said, I'm really only beginning to understand it for myself. But what it means for me is th at when I encounter someone who is working around identity, I approach slowly, with an open mind, caution and lots of thought. If you don't already do it, take some time this week to think about identity. Which ones do you use, how has that changed over the years, and how comfortable are you now with the identities you choose, and the ones that are chosen for you. ~ Cory |
