| 2 September 2010 UK Edition | Dear Reader, A new study on resveratrol — something red wine and blueberries have in common — shows that the compound could prevent some causes of blindness. And another suggests that resveratrol could help with weight loss. US researchers at Washington University School of Medicine, recently found that resveratrol could flat-out stop out-of- control blood vessel growth in the eyes. What's the big deal with that? Well, abnormal blood-vessel formation is a direct cause of the blindness associated with such diseases as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. It also plays a role in certain cancers. Which is why this is very good news. Previously, resveratrol had been shown to have an effect on blood vessels elsewhere in the body, but this is the first time we've seen a study on its action in the eye. Mice who had developed abnormal blood vessel growth were given resveratrol. The results? The overgrown blood vessels began to simply disappear. Researchers found the results so promising that they said resveratrol could be used as a preventive therapy in high-risk patients. Now on to weight loss. Just to let you know, the study on resveratrol and body weight was conducted on lemurs - primates that look something like a cat crossed with a squirrel. But the results are promising, and they support some previous findings in human studies. Researchers gave lemurs 200 mg of resveratrol every day through their four-week winter body-mass gain period. They found that the lemurs given resveratrol ate 13 per cent fewer calories. Plus, there was a pretty hefty boost in their resting metabolism — it went up by 29 per cent. Oh, and the animals' activity levels didn't change. Translation — no extra exercise! Of course, you want to know how much resveratrol to take every day. Previously, Dr. Wright has recommended a minimum of 200 to 300 mg per day for a person who weighs 150 pounds. Continues below... NEW HOPE FOR PAIN SUFFERERS

Q: So, my doctor told me I have an elevated CRP level. What in the world does that mean?
Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: CRP stands for C-reactive protein. It is a protein that circulates in the blood, especially when there is inflammation in the body, including inflammation of the coronary arteries. Doctors are finding that it is a far more accurate indicator of a future problem with heart disease than cholesterol levels alone.
The simplest way to lower the CRP level is to reduce inflammation in the body. The best way to accomplish this is to pay close attention to the ratio of essential fatty acids in the diet.
Here's a simple rule to remember: Omega-6 fatty acids are pro-inflammatory and omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory. So the fatty acid ratio should be more 3s and less 6s. Unfortunately, the standard diet is much heavier on the omega-6s.
But you can reverse that with a few simple changes. Foods containing hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils are the biggest offenders for loading up on omega-6s. Staying away from crisps, corn chips, crackers, and biscuits is a good start — but when you start reading the labels at your local supermarket, you might find that even things you considered "healthy" also contain it.Also, most nut oils, like sunflower, peanut, and almond, are high in omega-6s. Olive oil is the best choice.
Fish oil is the best way to increase your intake of omega-3 essential fatty acids. I recommend 1 tablespoon of cod liver oil and 1,500 milligrams of DHA daily. And remember, whenever you take any type of fatty acid, you need to take vitamin E as well (400 IU of vitamin E as mixed tocopherols). Vitamin E helps keep the fatty acids from breaking down too rapidly in the body.
Also worth noting, sometimes CRP can be elevated with other types of infection such as chlamydia and helicobacteria. These can also inflame blood vessels.
