Scar or cicatrices is a mark or patch on the skin that develops after a skin injury. As the injury or wound starts healing, a thicker patch of skin or fibrous tissue covers up the wound in the form of scar. Thus scars are an indication of the biological healing process. The skin on the scar has a different color when compared to the normal skin tone. It may be a dark patch; a pink one or even shinier. Scars are composed of a protein called collagen, and the collagen alignment in a scar tissue is of inferior functional quality. This explains why hair follicles or sweat glands do not occur again in a scar tissue. The size and look of a scar depends on the size of the wound, the location, age of the victim and the inherited tendency to scars. Scars may be of the following types. 1. Keloid - These scars cover an area which is more than the original wound area. They result in stiffness and immobility. 2. Contracture - These are the results of burns. The skin becomes tightly stretched over bones. They may also interfere with the mobility. 3.
