Dear Reader,

It's no big secret — many women rely on cranberry juice and supplements to prevent and fight painful urinary tract infections.

But new research shows that the power of the cranberry isn't just restricted to "women's problems."

No matter your gender, if you're concerned at all about MRSA or other staph infections (major worries in this age of the antibiotic-resistant "superbug"), you might want to stock the fridge with cranberry juice.

Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in New England, in the US, found that a cranberry juice cocktail blocked a strain of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) from beginning the infection process.

The researchers say this is all early data, but they were surprised at how effective the juice was in preventing infection. Could it be that, with all our advances in medical technology, all the money that goes into drugs that end up being useless against these infections, the answer is as simple as a little red berry?

Basically, when S. aureus gets in the body, the bacteria attach to host cells and form a biofilm, making themselves a nice little home where they can multiply. It appears that cranberry juice keeps the little nasties from forming those biofilms — severely cramping their multiplication style.

Like I said, this is some pretty early research, but there's certainly no harm in adding more cranberry to your diet. With MRSA cases rising in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and even gyms, it's becoming a more and more frightening issue.

With antibiotics failing left and right, it's uncertain how long the medical mainstream can keep the situation under any kind of control. We need all the help we can get — and it looks like cranberry juice is a pretty darn promising place to start.

The benefits of B12 without the shot

Q: Maybe I'm being a baby, but I just can't stand the thought of needles. I want to try your B12 recommendation for bursitis, but I dread getting a shot. Couldn't I get the same results from oral B12 supplements or sublingual vitamin B12 drops?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: You're definitely not the only person who hasn't outgrown a fear of injections. I hear similar requests from patients and readers on almost a daily basis. And until very recently, my answer has been to go ahead and try, but don't be surprised if it doesn't work. Unlike the injectable form, oral vitamin B12 has been notoriously unreliable. However, a new type of delivery system may have changed that.

Liposomes are tiny, tiny spheres formed from natural lipids (fats). Liposomes surround water-soluble nutrients like vitamin B12, enabling them to pass through lipid membranes — in this case, intestinal cell walls — with much greater ease. So an increasing number of nutrients (as well as patent medications) are being produced in "liposomal delivery" form, which allows consumers to get more benefit from oral supplements.

Two to three years ago, I worked with Life Enhancement to formulate a liposomal form of vitamin B12 called ProBone-O drops. It has 1,000 micrograms of vitamin B12 and 1,000 micrograms of folic acid — which "pairs" with vitamin B12 in many metabolic reactions — per 1/2 cc dose. It's available through specialist pharmacies, natural health food stores, and online sources. So far, this liposomal delivery form appears to work better than any form of vitamin B12 except for the injectable one.
