| | | 9 November 2010 UK Edition | Dear Reader, You've got a headache. Or you woke up with an aching back. Or you knocked your knee on the corner of a table. So do you take something, or just weather the pain? Take something, right? Pop a little pill and sit back as the pain fades away (for a little while at least). It's so easy. But it's not so simple. Popping that pill could open you up to an increased risk of liver failure. Kidney damage. Heart attack. Bleeding disorders. Okay, point taken. Who would willingly subject themselves to such risks? Millions of people, that's who. No matter how much we add to the long list of risks associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the marketing always speaks louder. They're safe! They're effective! Keep a steady supply stocked in your medicine chest, in your purse, in your car — you never want to be without your painkillers! I can't help but hope we can keep chipping away, though — especially with developments like the one I read about today. A study of almost 38,000 Taiwanese adults (age 20 or older) who had suffered a stroke concluded that taking a NSAID in the month prior to the stroke might have led to an elevated risk of having that stroke. The risk varied from anywhere between 20 per cent and a shocking 90 per cent, depending on the drug. Researchers looked at quite a few medications including ibuprofen and other oral NSAIDs, as well as some given intravenously, such as ketorolac (Toradol). So here we have one more serious risk added to the ever- growing list. Will the news stop people from popping those pills? Probably not. Of course, some doctors are saying the lesson here is that even over the counter medicine are drugs... with side effects and all. But how do you tell that to the public that's been inundated with messages about how safe and effective these drugs are. I don't remember any of these telling me I might be putting myself in danger by taking it for a headache... The best we can do is to keep spreading the word that we need to pay close attention to what we're putting in our bodies. Why not start by forwarding this e-mail to someone you care about? Wright: To stop migraine headaches in their tracks a relatively rapid intravenous injection of magnesium and vitamin B6 may be all you need. But there are ways to help prevent a migraine from occurring at all or at least lessen its frequency. It all begins with avoiding allergy triggers (if you don't know what yours are, then get tested), preventing dips in your blood sugar by eating small, more frequent meals, and supplementing with 200 mg of magnesium citrate daily, 200 mg of vitamin B6 daily, 200 milligrams of vitamin B2 two to three times daily (backed up with a B-complex 50 twice daily), three feverfew capsules twice daily, and a hypoallergenic multiple vitamin- mineral. You'll find prevention is the key in migraine therapy. Bear in mind we are not addressing anyone's personal situation and you should rely on this for informational purposes only.
