Dear Reader,

Some of the drugs promise a youthful head of hair. Others, easier trips to the bathroom thanks to a smaller prostate.

Both are associated, of course, with vigour and... well... manliness.

Which is why the results of new research reviewing several studies are incredibly ironic. Not to mention distressing.

The research, published in the March issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, shows that these drugs, dutasteride (Avodart) and finasteride (Proscar and Propecia), are linked to erectile dysfunction, depression, and loss of libido.

So there's the irony — but it's not the most distressing part. That would be the fact that, in some cases, the effects are irreversible. That's right — for some men, quitting the drugs didn't help. The damage was done, for the rest of their lives.

According to the lead researcher, Abdulmaged M. Traish, almost everyone who takes the drugs experiences the side effects to some degree. Some to a greater extent than others, of course, but the sad truth is that, if you're taking dutasteride or finasteride, you're likely going to end up coping with sexual dysfunction.

The reason is that these drugs work by blocking androgen, which we all know is essential for sexual function as well as for, as Traish puts it, "just feeling good."

Many men who start experiencing the symptoms of sexual dysfunction or depression while taking one of the drugs and therefore decide to stop are hoping to get their lives back to normal. Unfortunately, that doesn't always happen.

So are doctors telling their patients about these potential side effects — especially the fact that they could be permanent? That could be part of the problem, as one of the conclusions of the research is that doctors need to take the time to keep their patients informed.

In fact, one urologist said it's not common to discuss the potential for irreversible side effects because they "have not been aware of any long-term problems from these drugs."

Well... now you should be. So I'm curious to see... will it change anything?

Some men may decide to take dutasteride or finasteride. It's all about personal choice. But part of personal choice is having all of the information necessary to MAKE a choice.

Bad for pests, bad for children

Q: I have been talking to my daughter about feeding her children organic foods, but she says they're too expensive and that she thinks it's all a marketing thing, anyway. What can I say to help convince her to rethink her stance?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: When we were children, the only place for us to get organic foods was from the family garden. And even then, it was only organic if our parents were pioneers in the no-pesticide, no-herbicide, no- chemical-fertilizer movement. When we became parents, the situation wasn't much better: We could still have organic gardens and a few health food stores were starting to carry organic produce, but other organic foods (especially meat, eggs, and non-local fruit) were still hard to find.

The situation today is dramatically different. Local natural food stores have much more organic food available. There are even two nationwide organic and natural-food supermarkets, Whole Foods and Wild Oats. Major brands are getting into the organic business; for example, Gerber is selling organic baby food under the Tender Harvest label.

Given the rise of this healthful trend, its quite possible that your grandchildren are eating organic foods already. But if they aren't, perhaps telling their parents about a study from the National Institutes of Health will nudge them in that direction.

In the study, 23 children were monitored over a 15-day period for urinary levels of one of the most common categories of pesticides: organophosphates. Urine specimens were collected in the morning and evening. At the beginning of the study, all the children had been eating regular supermarket food. For five consecutive days, organic foods were substituted for the regular foods.

The researchers found that as soon as an organic diet was introduced, the pesticide levels dropped to non-detectable levels. And as soon as regular foods were re-introduced, the pesticide levels went right back up again.

The researchers wrote: We were able to demonstrate that an organic diet provides a dramatic and immediate protective effect against exposures to pesticides that are commonly used in agricultural production. We also concluded that these children were most likely exposed to these organophosphorus pesticides exclusively through their diet.

The study showed that traces of the pesticides disappeared from the urine, but it didn't address the possibility that some pesticide and other chemical residues might be stored away in a child's fat cells even after pesticide and other chemical exposure were eliminated and/or minimized. Of course, knowing that the pesticides could take up a more permanent residence in your grandchildren would just be further reason to switch to organic foods.

The best protection is prevention. As the study shows, the day after a child (and likely an adult, too) goes organic, exposure to agricultural chemicals goes to zero or near- zero. That's a big step in the direction of better health!
