UK Edition

Dear Reader,

The last thing a man wants to talk about is problems in the bedroom.

Then, when he finally DOES work himself up to discussing it with his doctor, he's handed a prescription for a drug like Viagra.

And he might get results — he might feel like the young, virile stud he was when he first wooed his wife.

But has the drug really "fixed" anything? One US expert, a California urologist Dr. William Pearce, says no.

He says that erectile dysfunction (ED) is usually a symptom of a much bigger problem associated with blood flow. It could be caused by diabetes, or by blood pressure medications that reduce blood flow. And he has one very important, very simple piece of advice.

Live a heart-healthy lifestyle and your chances of avoiding ED go way up. Find out how to best manage the diabetes that could be the culprit. Stop smoking — men who smoke are 3 to 4 times more likely to have ED than non-smokers. Avoid blood pressure lowering drugs like nitroglycerin. Tackle sources of stress in your life. Committing to a heart-healthy lifestyle increases blood flow to ALL parts of the body.

And, importantly — taking a drug specifically for ED means you could be ignoring the bigger problem. ED can be a red flag for kidney problems and atherosclerosis. Popping a Viagra might help performance — but it's not going to do anything for those underlying conditions.

This is nothing new to you, but I think it's worth repeating: We have to abandon the mainstream notion of treating one problem at a time. One of the things I love about a natural approach to health is that it's about the WHOLE body. Our bodies aren't a collection of parts — every system of the body is connected. Improve one system and improve them all.

I know too many people with medicine cabinets full of medicines to treat side effects of other medicines. It's a ridiculous, vicious cycle that must be broken. Dr. Pearce's comments on ED illustrate this perfectly. Sure, a man might end up feeling better about his performance in the bedroom, but what if he were to work with a doctor skilled in natural medicine to tackle the underlying cause of his ED? Can you imagine how much healthier and happier he would be — WITHOUT relying on a full stock of drugs?

That's probably enough preaching out of me, especially since it's going right to the choir. But I must confess, articles like the interview with Dr. Pearce that I read leave me feeling both angered by the mainstream approach into which so many people still feel trapped and inspired by the progress we're making in convincing people they CAN break those chains.

Skipping Stones

Q: What's your advice for preventing kidney stones?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: In 1974, US researchers from Harvard had a study printed in the Journal of Urology showing that calcium oxalate kidney stones (the most common kind) could be prevented by supplementing with magnesium oxide and vitamin B6.

In the study, 149 individuals with a multiyear history of recurrent calcium oxalate kidney stones took 300 mg per day of magnesium oxide along with 10 mgs a day of vitamin B6. During the six years of the study, the mean rate of stone formation fell from 1.3 kidney stones per year to 0.1 kidney stones per year, a very significant 92.3 per cent reduction. There were no side effects.

Yet even into the 90s, most urologists were still in the dark about this natural treatment — at least it seemed that way to me, since they never mentioned it to their patients. I made sure I always kept copies of the study on hand for calcium oxalate kidney stone sufferers to give to their uninformed urologists. And it still amazes me that to this day, I continue to encounter a few calcium oxalate kidney stone sufferers whose urologists haven't told them to use magnesium and vitamin B6 every day!
