From Marcia Purse, your Guide to Bipolar Disorder
Selena Gomez fans are jumping on me because I jumped on Selena. One of them said, "When she said that she was kidding! STOP HATING HER! Like you said you know barely anything about her so don't talk about her like that! :( I <3 SELENA!" Let me make it clear that I don't hate Selena Gomez. Below you'll see what Selena said and, by following the link, what I said that has the "I <3 Selena" fans up in arms. (By the way, I stand by what I said.)

Can Your Mood Stabilizer Interfere With Birth Control?
The answer is yes, some of them can. Carbamazepine (sold as Tegretol and other brand names) is especially known for causing contraceptive failures and also has a higher than normal risk for causing birth defects. There are other mood stabilizers that can affect contraceptives as well.

Anticonvulsants and Birth Defects
Obviously clinical studies aren't done where some pregnant women are assigned to take an anticonvulsant like Depakote and others are not. But by looking at records of a mother's medications and the health of her newborn, researchers know that some mood stabilizers have a high risk of causing birth defects.

Selena Gomez and the Bipolar Bandwagon
Guess what? In the wake of the news that both Catherine Zeta-Jones and Demi Lovato have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, teen celebrity Selena Gomez thinks she has a "touch of bipolar-ness." Isn't that cute? As an attention-getter, Selena's gaffe is getting boos. Read my take and comment with your own.

Genetic Risk of Suicide in Bipolar Disorder
Researchers at Johns Hopkins university say they've identified a gene variant that makes people with bipolar disorder more likely to attempt suicide. It's a discovery that has the potential to save lives.
