UK Edition

Dear Reader,

I can't begin to imagine the heartache and frustration my mother's two sisters went through when they were trying to start their families.

Unlike my mother, who had my brother and me without any problems, my aunts both had quite a lot of trouble conceiving — and one spent a lot of hard-earned money on the treatments that, happily, resulted in the birth of my twin cousins.

Many families struggle with fertility problems, and many go through years of treatments that don't always work — and always put financial and emotional strain on the couples who want so desperately to have a child.

But what if something as simple as a supplement could help? Could it be that something so easy and so readily available could be the key to welcoming a little bundle of joy into your life?

Well, according to new research published in the Cochrane Library, the answer could be yes — if the problem is male sub-fertility.

Researchers reviewed 34 trials involving 2,876 couples who were undergoing treatments like in vitro fertilization and sperm injections. Most of the men involved had low sperm counts or motility.

The research team found that, if the male half of the couple took antioxidants, the couple was more likely to get pregnant and have a succesful pregnancy. Other small trials have shown positive effects of antioxidants on sperm motility and concentration.

Antioxidants help reduce damage done by reactive oxygen species, which damage sperm cells and make it harder for couples to conceive.

The lead researcher for this recent review said the results are promising enough to encourage men to take antioxidants to increase chances of pregnancy. There were many different types of antioxidants — all taken orally — involved in the trial, and researchers are hoping the next step is to put those antioxidants side-by-side to see which are best when it comes to boosting a family's chances of welcoming their little bundle of joy.

Desperate for a diet

Q: So here we are, almost 6 months into the year, and I still haven't lost any weight. I'm thinking about a low-carb approach. What do you think?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: Low-carb diets are generally the best choice for people who have type 2 diabetes or symptoms of low blood sugar, or a family history of these problems. People with these problems are most likely to have some degree of insulin resistance along with excess insulin excretion, also known as hyper-insulinism. And insulin resistance is often associated with excess weight. Low-carb diets can help control your blood sugar swings and, in turn, your insulin levels, which may very well help you take a few inches off your waist.

If you or your family members don't have any of these problems, a low-carb diet may still help you lose some weight, but it may not work as well.

If you haven't inherited this family tendency, then insulin resistance probably isn't responsible for your excess weight. Obviously, a diet that is suitable for a metabolic problem you don't have is less likely to work. But as long as you're following a healthy low-carb diet (one that includes lots of vegetables and lean, organic meats), it certainly won't hurt to try.
