Dear Reader,

Previously, I told you about an article in Newsweek which made ridiculous claims about antioxidants being bad for you.

Dr. Wright, of course, did a brilliant job in debunking these ludicrous claims when he responded to the article... and now there are even more research findings proving just how beneficial antioxidants can be.

Those in the know have long suspected how powerful antioxidants can be — after all, antioxidant drugs are already used to treat serious illnesses like lung disease and malaria.

And of course, there are some who have said that, despite these applications, we've been underestimating the extent of the power of antioxidants. But there has been something missing to support this argument — genetic evidence.

Until now, that is.

Antioxidant Researchers from Thomas Jefferson University's Kimmel Cancer Center, in the US, have found genetic evidence that antioxidants could help prevent and treat cancer because they fight against one of the very things that drives tumour growth: oxidative stress.

In the findings, published in the journal Cancer Biology & Therapy, the researchers explain that they discovered that oxidative stress at the mitochondrial level is a key in driving tumour growth.

The short version: "Reducing oxidative stress in the body will decrease tumour growth."

Of course, the researchers see this as a sign that new anti- cancer drugs targeting such oxidative stress need to be developed. Right now, such drugs aren't used because they threaten the effectiveness of chemotherapy — some chemo treatments increase oxidative stress.

So, this research isn't just a blow to Newsweek's bad reporting, but a bit of a blow to the biggest tool in cancer treatment, too.

The researchers also point out that taking antioxidant supplements, including the amino acid metabolite N-acetyl cysteine — often taken to boost the immune system — is a great cancer preventative. So, I guess we can thank them for a little supplement shout-out.

All in the wrist

Q: I keep telling myself it can't be carpal tunnel — I hate the thought of having surgery. But my wrists and palms have been getting numb pretty frequently over the past couple of months. I'm afraid it really might be carpal tunnel, but am hoping you can suggest a natural treatment before I have to get surgery.

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: If you're not certain that you have carpal tunnel syndrome, your first step should be to make an appointment with a doctor who can tell you for sure. In the meantime, there is a "self test" you can try that may help give you a better idea. Try bending your wrist forward and compressing it firmly from behind. Hold it for two or three minutes. If that brings on or aggravates the numbness, your hunch about it being carpal tunnel syndrome may be correct (but, again, it's best to check with a doctor before undergoing any treatment — even natural ones).

If your doctor confirms that it is indeed carpal tunnel syndrome, there are two different natural approaches you may want to consider before opting for surgery. First, you may want to try taking 100 milligrams of vitamin B6 three times daily. (The "pyridoxal-5-phosphate," or P5P, form of vitamin B6 works the best.) If that doesn't work after several weeks, consider applying liquid vitamin B12 mixed with DMSO to the underside of the injured wrist several times daily for another few weeks. (You'll likely need a prescription for the liquid form of vitamin B12 since it's typically used for injections).
