| Dear Reader, We often talk about healthy diets and eating the right food... which may leave some to believe that other 'treats' — like having your favourite chocolate — are left out of the healthy equation... However, today I'm going to give you a few excuses to eat some chocolate every day (as long as it is the right type). First, new research published in the Chemistry Central Journal shows that cocoa powder contains a greater antioxidant capacity than fruit powders and dark chocolate, and cocoa contains more polyphenols and flavanoids than fruit juice. This led researchers to deem cacao seeds a "super fruit," meaning they provide "nutritive value beyond that of their macronutrient composition." How about a nice piece of dark chocolate to celebrate? The second piece of chocolate-loving good news comes from the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, which recently published a report on the benefits chocolate can offer your heart. The report found that the polyphenols in chocolate spur certain proteins into action, including those that boost HDL 'good' cholesterol. Cocoa appears to both boost HDL cholesterol and decrease levels of LDL 'bad' cholesterol in the liver and intestines, thereby helping to reduce the risk of heart disease. Other recent research shows that chocolate could help lower blood pressure, and that dark chocolate in particular could help ease emotional stress. Which brings us to the point that dark chocolate has more polyphenols than milk chocolate, so stick with the deep, dark stuff — which happens to be my favourite, anyway! Continues below... Getting steamy Q: Like so many other people, I joined a gym last month. I've been eyeing up the sauna. Are saunas good for you? Do you recommend their use? Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: I previously wrote about this topic and outlined the numerous health benefits associated with saunas. The most well-known benefits include relaxation and detoxification. But they also have positive effects on the heart, lowering blood pressure and reducing risk of atherosclerosis. Research indicates that saunas' high temperatures increase the production of a substance called nitric oxide synthase in the arteries. Increased levels of nitric oxide synthase will produce more nitric oxide, which helps dilate coronary arteries and, in turn, improves heart function. However, one thing to keep in mind is that the specific type of sauna I wrote about is called a far-infrared sauna. Far infrared waves warm things without actually heating up the air in between the heat source and the object. So in a far infrared sauna, the air is warm and dry, as opposed to the humid heat in traditional saunas. I'm not sure which type they have at your gym, but it's likely the traditional steam version. As I mentioned above, those still offer the benefits of detoxification and relaxation, but the research I've found on the heart-health benefits has all been done using far-infrared saunas. That said, the most economical way to get the benefits of a far-infrared sauna is probably to buy one for your own home. They range in price, so do some research before deciding on a particular brand.
