From Marcia Purse, your Guide to Bipolar Disorder
Is there a test for bipolar disorder? Not yet - but researchers are working hard to find tests that can help diagnose BP and other mental illnesses. Two new studies have yielded results that are very hopeful for the future.

Possible Blood Test for Schizophrenia
A new test called VeriPsych may help diagnose schizophrenia in children and adults. If true, this may lead to similar testing that could help confirm or deny a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. It's exciting news!

Brain Scans May Differentiate BP from ADHD
Another exciting possibility: A small study found clear-cut differences in brain activity between children with bipolar disorder, those with ADHD, and a control group who had neither disorder.

Like a Mental Roller Coaster
Reader Ratfancy writes: "My goodness - I knew I wasn't the only one with the 20 minutes mood changes! It's really a "trip." I think that's why I never did drugs in the '70s, because I was already tripping!! At my first visit to a pdoc in my mid-30s I described it as being in a grocery store where each aisle was a different mood."

It's not a sign of weakness to ask for help
Talking about his rapid cycling bipolar disorder, reader Scott says: "I rarely have hypomania, but do experience the deep depression twice a year, with less severe episodes the rest of the time. I find my cycling when it's bad to go on by the hour. One minute on top of the world, the next that same world is in chaos. It has affected our family a great deal."
