Dear Reader,

If you've been struggling to lose weight, this e-Tip might make you a little mad.

But I just want you to keep this saying in mind: Don't shoot the messenger!

The reason this one might get you riled up? It's all about how downright EASY weight loss can be — using a few simple, newly investigated tricks. Here you've been struggling to drop the number on the scale, and it turns out that a couple of small adjustments could send it plummeting.

First up is a trick from the American Psychological Association. In fact, this really is a trick — it's all about making little changes so you actually trick yourself into eating healthier meals and less calories.

The idea is that we've filled our homes with "hidden eating traps" and that we just aren't able to consciously think about every single thing we eat. So, all you have to do is make a few adjustments based on a few different studies.

They suggest changing your serving dishes. In one study, they found that people pour 37 per cent more liquid into short, wide cups than into tall, skinny glasses that hold the same volume. Cereal bowls should also be switched out. Children given 16 oz. bowls ate twice as much as those with bowls half that size.

They also say you shouldn't rely on your stomach to tell you when you're full — in one study, participants were given bowls that slowly refilled with soup as they ate. Those participants ate a shocking 73 per cent more soup than people who were given normal bowls. The bottom line of their advice — eat off smaller dishes, eat in the kitchen or dining room, and keep healthy food where you can see it and get to it easily. Before you know it, you'll find yourself making healthier choices without even thinking about it…and you'll never miss those massive dinner plates!

The second trick comes from research reported in the Journal of Nutrition, which finds that adding certain spices to your meal could boost your metabolism. The spices you should be sprinkling? Turmeric, cinnamon, rosemary, oregano, garlic powder, and paprika. I don't know about you, but my mouth is watering just thinking about that list!

In the study, men who ate meals spiked with these spices had insulin levels and triglyceride levels drop 21 per cent and 31 per cent, respectively.

Bonus: Those spices are also antioxidants.

Our last trick comes out of China, where researchers have discovered something your parents probably pushed the whole time you were growing up. How many times did you hear, "Chew your food!" at the dinner table?

Your parents were right to push proper chewing. But they probably didn't realize that it could help you in your adult struggles to lose weight.

When men in this study were asked to chew their food 40 times for each bite (compared to 15 times), they actually consumed almost 12 fewer calories during meals. They also had lower expression of the hormone that stimulates hunger.

So there you have it — three easy tricks that won't cost much — a trip to the store for a few new dishes and a boost to your spice rack — that might just be the trick to whittling that waistline!

Ditch that hearing aid!

Q: I'm getting older, and I feel like I'm constantly asking my children to repeat themselves. I'm afraid my hearing is going — is there anything at all that I can do?

Dr Jonathan V. Wright: Dr Dennis Trune, of Oregon Health Sciences University, in the US, pioneered research showing that the naturally occurring adrenal steroid hormone aldosterone can often reverse hearing loss in animals.

Based on Dr. Trune's work, I've had aldosterone levels tested in many individuals with hearing loss (most of them "older"), and a significant number turned out to have low or "low normal" measurements. But after taking bio- identical aldosterone in "physiologic" quantities — amounts that would normally be present in adult human bodies — more than half of these individuals have regained a significant proportion of their "lost" hearing.

I've been surprised by two aspects of bio-identical aldosterone treatment for hearing loss. First, when it works, it works relatively rapidly, restoring a significant degree of hearing within the first two months. In fact, a few of the people I've worked with have literally heard improvement within just two to three weeks.

The other thing that surprised me about aldosterone therapy is that it's capable of restoring a significant degree of hearing even years after the hearing loss initially occurred. So far, the longest interval I've witnessed was in an 87-year-old man who'd lost his hearing 13 years prior to regaining a significant degree of it using aldosterone.

None of the people I've worked with have had any adverse effects from aldosterone therapy, likely because the use of bio-identical, physiologic-dose aldosterone restores levels to those that would be found in the body anyway.

I've focused this treatment on individuals with hearing loss and low or low-normal aldosterone levels, but I do know of one individual who decided to try this approach for his hearing loss even though his aldosterone levels were quite normal. His hearing did improve, but unless you too are a qualified professional who can prescribe bio- identical aldosterone and order lab tests for sodium and potassium (sodium and potassium regulation are two of aldosterone's major responsibilities), please don't take aldosterone, bio-identical or not, if your measured levels are perfectly normal!
