Dear Reader,

Does the very thought of staying in a hospital fill you with dread?

Do you get chills when you imagine day after day of staring at the same four walls?

Well — it IS possible to shorten the length of your stay. This method doesn't cost a thing, doesn't take any pre-planning, and it's been proven by a study published in the journal, Archives of Internal Medicine.

All it takes is taking a walk. That's right — the secret to cutting down on your days in the hospital is as simple as getting up and getting moving. A study of 485 people aged 70 and older who were hospitalized for at least two days in the internal ward of an Israel hospital reveals the trick.

The study excluded people who were restricted by mobility, for obvious reasons. But those who were able to move were divided into two groups: people who stayed in bed or seated in their rooms, and people who walked around their rooms and the ward.

Every single one of the patients who walked shortened their hospital stays — by an impressive average day and a half. Those who walked around the ward on the first day of hospitalization shortened their stays more than those who stayed in bed the first day. The researchers said this was true no matter what a particular patient's health status was.

Unfortunately, most people are under the impression that you have to stay in bed when you're in the hospital — that it's just part of the whole deal. But as you get older, your muscles can break down pretty quickly when you stay put — and just a little bit of mobility can keep your body functioning — and better able to heal.

Of course, this tip doesn't work for patients who are immobile. But for those who are able to be up and about, taking strolls around your room and ward could get you back home early.

    Adios, aluminium

Q: I know I should be avoiding aluminium. What's your advice for eliminating it from my life?

Dr Jonathan V. Wright: Even though researchers keep saying there's no "proven" cause-and-effect relationship between aluminium and Alzheimer's disease, you and I both know that aluminium can't be good for your brain. So maybe you've stopped using deodorants containing aluminium. And you've probably quit using aluminium-containing cookware. Generally, my guess is you probably try to avoid aluminium as much as you can. And that's a very good idea, since it really has no place in human metabolism.

But avoiding aluminium ingestion altogether is literally impossible. That's because aluminium is one of the most abundant elements in soil. So anything that grows from the ground – or eats things growing from the ground – contains aluminium. Here are some examples of the average amounts of aluminium found in common foods:

    • Wheat and corn: 140 PPM (parts per million)
    • Potatoes: 100 PPM
    • Lettuce: 90 PPM
    • Beans: 165 PPM
    • Tomatoes: 90 PPM
    • Pineapple: 100 PPM
    • Bananas: 97 PPM
    • Coffee: 97 PPM

You get the idea: There is no food containing zero aluminium.

Fortunately, your intestines have built-in safeguards against absorbing much of the aluminium that's naturally present in foods. These safeguards work fairly well, unless your calcium intake drops too low. If your calcium intake is too low, your blood calcium might also start to drop. To prevent blood calcium from going too low, your body makes more parathyroid hormone (PTH). And, in addition to its other functions in the body, extra PTH significantly increases intestinal aluminium absorption.

So the best way to keep aluminium absorption down as much as possible is to make sure your calcium intake is adequate. Even though there's certainly calcium in food, it's still a good idea to take a multiple vitamin-mineral with a minimum of 250-500 milligrams of supplemental calcium. A separate calcium-magnesium supplement with 1,000 milligrams or more of calcium may be an even better choice, depending on your individual needs. Talk to a doctor skilled in natural medicine to determine the best option for you.
