| 11 October 2011 UK Edition | Dear Reader, It's no secret that I'm a big fan of vitamin D. Nearly every week, I write to you about some new study showing how this miracle vitamin tackles yet another illness or condition.
Obviously, everyone should be taking a daily dose of vitamin D. (Dr. Wright points out that the sun is the best way to get it, but that adults and teens should take 4,000 International Units per day, and that infants and children should take 1,000 per day.)
Of course, often where we see an inexpensive way for all people to maintain their health, Big Pharma sees only pound signs.
Recently, biopharmaceutical company Rockwell Medical announced that it had scored an Abbreviated New Drug Application for injectable vitamin D (dubbed Calcitriol) for people with end-stage renal disease who are undergoing haemodialysis. That's right — they're taking our D and renaming it a "drug."
People with kidney disease aren't as able to convert nutritional vitamin D into active vitamin D, which leads to deficiency. Therefore, they're often prescribed vitamin D.
Of course, the guys at Rockwell are pretty excited about It — and aren't too shy about the reasons why. They came right out and said they're "excited to add another renal drug to [their] expanding pipeline of products," that this new "drug" will allow them to leverage "more profitable renal products," and that it will help them to "penetrate the vitamin D market effectively."
So, make no bones about it — it's all about money, money, money.
And of course, they're not the first to spin D as a drug. Call it Calcitriol, call it Rocaltrol, call it Calcijex... it's all nothing more than D3 and a few additives.
And if they can do it with D3, why not with all forms of vitamin D? Will the D supplements in our natural markets disappear as Big Pharma companies win patents for something that should not be patentable?
Considering how important vitamin D is to our health — and how crucial it is to keep it accessible for all people — this is a really big deal. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this story. In the meantime, continue to support the supplement companies that make your D.

Q: I was telling a friend about how important essential fatty acids are for our health, and he said they're bad for us! I was floored. Is this true? Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: There have been some studies linking one particular essential fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) to increased risk of prostate cancer and cataracts. ALA is the major fatty acid found in flaxseed and flaxseed oil. While not all of the studies on ALA agree with these findings, there is enough evidence to be cause for some concern. However, it's important to remember that ALA is an essential- to-life fatty acid, and it's highly unlikely that Nature would require us to have it in order to survive if there was no way around these potential negative effects. It's very possible that another nutrient or several nutrients are involved in the ALA-prostate cancer and ALA-cataract connection, and that using more (or less) of these would "erase" any possible harm from higher levels of ALA. Unfortunately, researchers rarely consider nutrients in more complex interactions. So it'll likely be a long time until this aspect of the "ALA question" is considered. In the meantime, this does not mean that you need to eliminate flaxseed and flaxseed oil from your diet! In addition to ALA there are many other healthful nutrients present, especially in whole flaxseed. However, if you're a "flaxseed fan," it's probably wisest to consult a doctor trained in natural medicine about what quantity of flaxseed or flaxseed oil might be best for you. And since too much ALA can suppress "5-alpha- reductase", if you're a man, you might want to have your "5-alpha reductase" enzyme activity measured. This is easily done from a 24-hour urinary steroid test. Some doctors may also recommend a red blood cell membrane essential fatty acid test (preferable to the serum test of essential fatty acids) to make sure your ALA levels aren't out of balance with other fatty acids.
