Dear Reader,

Concerned about dementia and Alzheimer's?

Pour yourself a cold one!

A study published in the journal Age and Ageing shows that people aged 75 or over who enjoy a daily beer or glass of wine aren't just unwinding — they're actually helping fight dementia and Alzheimer's.

Over the course of three years, 3,202 people free of dementia and aged 75 and older were studied. The participants were checked 18 months into the study and again at the three-year mark.

Out of the 3,202 people in the study, 217 ended up developing dementia. It was found that people who drank alcohol were 30 per cent less likely to develop dementia and 40 per cent less likely to develop Alzheimer's than people who didn't drink.

It didn't matter what kind of alcohol the subjects drank — but we are talking about moderation here. Heavy alcohol use, of course, is associated with a host of health problems, including decreased memory function and cognitive abilities.

This study adds to a growing body of evidence that light to moderate drinking goes hand-in-hand with improved cognitive function and a lower risk of dementia.

A way to sweet silence?

Q: My doctor says there's nothing he can do about my tinnitus, but there must be something. Your thoughts would be of great help.

Dr Jonathan V. Wright: Unfortunately, there is no 100 per cent effective cure for tinnitus. But there are a few things to try that often reduce ringing in the ears — and occasionally eliminate it entirely. These include:

• Ginkgo biloba, 80 milligrams of a standardized preparation, three times daily

• Zinc (picolinate) 30 milligrams twice daily, "offset" with

• 2 milligrams copper, twice daily

• Vitamin B12, 1,000 micrograms injected once or twice weekly, along with 5 milligrams of folic acid each time. You'll need help from a doctor skilled in natural therapies for this.

Some individuals have also found that acupuncture can help reduce tinnitus. While I can't promise that any of these things will be a sure-fire solution, they're all very safe and can help improve your health in other ways too.
