Dear Reader,

School's only been back in session for a couple of weeks, but Johnny's already having a tough time.

The e-mails from his teachers have been coming in weekly — he's disorganized, he doesn't have his homework done, he's easily distracted. He's a great child, they say, and smart, too — but something has to be done.

The doctor says it's Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He wants to write a prescription, maybe for methylphenidate — but you're an e-Tip reader and you know the risks... just last year I wrote about the shocking risk of sudden death in children and adolescents taking stimulant medications for ADHD.

So, what's a parent or grandparent to do? You know Johnny could do well in school if you could get the ADHD under control, but you want a natural way to do it.

Of course, Dr. Jonathan V. Wright has offered quite a few possible solutions for ADHD in the past — in fact, one of the most common issues he points to when it comes to the disorder is food allergies. He's found dairy products to be the most frequent culprits, along with the additives and colourings used in processed foods.

And now, yet another piece of the ADHD puzzle may have been revealed — a clinical study of boys aged 7 to 11, all suffering from ADHD, revealed that krill oil may actually play a role in improving the symptoms of ADHD. The boys took a krill oil supplement every day for 90 days, and researchers found that clinical symptoms as well as EEG readings showed improvement.

Perhaps more importantly, especially to parents and grandparents who just want to know if it works, the boys' families reported significant improvements in attention and behaviour.

It was a small trial — only 18 boys participated — but the results are very promising. It's certainly worth exploring as an option — especially when the alternatives presented by the mainstream are so risky.

Cold season doesn't have to get the best of you

Q: I am determined not to spend this "cold season" in bed with a headache and runny nose! What can I do to fend off the sniffles?

Dr Jonathan V. Wright: Zinc lozenges are one of the best ways to get over a cold FAST — if you're taking the right ones. A study last year showed that people taking zinc acetate lozenges got over colds faster (4.0 days vs. 7.1 with placebo), had a shorter cough duration (2.1 days vs. 5.0), and shorter periods of nasal discharge (3.0 days vs. 4.5).

Like I said, though, you have to make sure you're taking the right ones. And that means checking the label to make sure those lozenges are zinc acetate, not any other kind! It has to do with the way it dissolves — the "acetate" form leaves 100% of the zinc behind to do its job — other forms aren't as effective. In fact, some leave behind close to 0%!

Zinc acetate lozenges are available at natural health food stores and online sources.
