Dear Reader,

Have you found a natural way to banish pain?

Or are you one of the millions who just can't get by without popping a couple of slow-release non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) to get through the long hours of the day?

Who would blame you, with every doctor telling you it's the only way to be free from pain?

Well, here's something you're not going to find them telling you any time soon.

Those slow-release all-day pain formulas could be doing some serious harm to your gastrointestinal system.

Long-time e-Tips readers know that NSAIDS have long been associated with gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding and perforation. In fact, a NSAID user is at significantly increased risk of GI complications like ulcers and bleeding.

With so many people taking NSAIDs, is it really surprising that between 15,000 and 20,000 Americans die each year from ulcers and GI bleeding linked to NSAID use?

The study, conducted at the Spanish Centre for Pharmacoepidemiological Research and published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism, shows that NSAIDs with a slow-release formulation are associated with a greater risk of GI bleeding or perforation. (They also found that risk varies by specific NSAID administered and dose.)

Researchers reviewed nine studies published between 2000 and 2008 and found that persistent exposure to the drugs (as in taking a formula that releases slowly through the course of the day) is key when it comes to the risk for GI injury.

Mysterious night sweats in children

Q: I've noticed that when I go in to check on my son after he's gone to sleep that his head and pillow are damp from sweat. Is this normal?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: Head sweating is one of the symptoms of rickets, a severe vitamin D deficiency disease that usually occurs in childhood. But over 20 years ago, Dr. Joseph T. Hart discovered that it doesn't necessarily indicate full-blown rickets. He found that head sweating could also be a sign of a less-severe vitamin D deficiency.

Talk to your child's doctor to rule out any other possible causes. If everything checks out, you may want to consider starting him on a vitamin D supplement, or increasing the dosage of any vitamin D supplements he might already be taking. Dr. Hart found that a dose of 1,200 IU of vitamin D per day generally clears up any deficiency and the symptoms — like head sweating — that accompany it.
