Dear Reader,

Guess who's left with its tail between its legs?... Pfizer.

Pfizer paid out $35 million to 4,500 doctors who worked with them to market their new drugs.

The admission was part of a settlement after Pfizer pleaded guilty to illegally promoting its drugs by using doctors as a mouthpiece to market new Pfizer drugs...

Sorry, I should say "educating" other doctors on the use of new Pfizer drugs. The company had to pay a $2.3 billion fine.

Will it even matter? Has Pfizer changed its ways? Not likely.

"Collaboration is essential between healthcare professionals and the pharmaceutical industry to ensure today's scientific advances truly improve the lives of patients," said Pfizer's chief medical officer. She went on to claim the Pfizer- doctor relationships will be transparent, and threw the word "trust" in there for good measure.

It doesn't really matter though. Pfizer doesn't even have to stop the payouts.

The new healthcare reform law in the US will require drug companies to disclose how much they pay doctors for consulting and speaking fees and other perks. So what? Is that really enough? They're still paying them!

Pfizer admitted to forking over all of this cash (decidedly NOT to research), but not without putting their usual spin on it. And sure, they paid a fine, but how many times have we read about drug companies paying a fine and then turning around and doing the same dirty deeds all over gain?

So now drug companies have to disclose what they're paying to doctors. They call it collaboration, and we're all stuck in the same place. Until we put our collective foot down and say "no more!" – nothing is going to change.

Natural vs. synthetic vitamins

Q: I heard an alternative medical doctor say the body only recognizes natural vitamins, and that it won't even use synthetics. Is that true?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: The body recognizes just about any substance you put into it — synthetic or not. The real question is what's best for you.

Ideally, I would tell you to take vitamin supplements and other nutrients concentrated only from natural sources. Vitamins (and minerals) in nature are almost always found in conjunction with other vitamins, minerals, and metabolic co-factors — vitamin C with a variety of flavonoids, for example. Since there's considerable "unity in nature," if vitamins are found with other nutrients in their natural form, it's very likely that they all work together in your body.

But unfortunately, our world is far from ideal, so, while the naturally concentrated forms of vitamins might be the best option, you shouldn't totally avoid synthetics. In many instances, they're the only sources of the higher doses your body may sometimes need.
