Treating Dry Skin

Bernice Hunter just returned from skiarea and was telling her friend Diane Harrison about the miserable problems she had with dry and cracked skin out in the cold. Diane told her that she had the same skin problem at Les Saisies, France. Another skiier explained the three ways that will keep your skin in good condition in cold weather. She definitely will use that on her trip to Saint-Urcize, Massif Central, France in the next few weeks.

Winter is the harshest time on our skin. A huge number of people suffer with itchy, irritated, cracked and painful skin. Running out to the local boutique to pick up the most well known healing lotions and creams to help quell the pain and heal the flaking for moments of relief. The bad news is most folks are missing the vital and cheap ways to not only get relief from dry, chapped and cracked skin, but also help prevent it.

We as humans are made up mostly of water. For some reason, in the shor, cold months of the year, we don't consider the need for drinking enough water. During the summer, when we are sweating and working out, we know we need to drink quite a bit of water to help replace the water that we have lost. During the winter the icy air does much the same to our body. It withdraws that water right out of us. This then dries out our skin, leaving it dry and itchy. Making sure that you take in 8 to 10 glasses of water a day will help you win the fight over your dry and rough skin. Use this one tip for the next two weeks and you will undoubtedly see a definite positive change in your skin in a couple of days.

On the same topic of the importance of moisture, a good moisturizing lotion is also a good idea. Find one that fits for your skin type so that you are not going to end up with oily uncomfortable skin. I recommend a cream instead of a lotion in cold weather, since a cream is thicker and more protective of the skin. You should also spend the time you need to read the label. The cream or lotion that you use in the summer is great for the summer, in the winter you will most likely need a different lotion. Avoid one with alcohol in the first few ingredients, as alcohol will actually dry out your skin, which is the opposite of what you need.

The third step is to dress with the right clothing in the cold. Don't just write this one off, consider it carefully. The more bare skin that you have increases the opportunity that the cold air has to remove the moisture from your skin. It is also a good idea to try to layer your clothes and let that innermost layer be clothes that are made out of cotton. Cotton will let you skin breathe, will keep you warm and won’t irritate your skin.

By heeding these three simple steps, you will not only start getting a big improvement in that really dry skin, an not only that you will also help prevent your skin from becoming dry. Plenty of fluids, the correct moisturizing cream for your skin type and the right clothing and you will have healthy, well hydrated, comfortable skin all over you.
