Cholesterol-Lowering Diet

From Jennifer Moll, your Guide to Cholesterol
There are many types of nuts that are delicious and can either complement the a salad or desert, or can be eaten alone. While you might think of nuts as being "fattening", you might not know that the fats that nuts contain have many heart healthy benefits. So whether you are looking for a topping for your salad or low-fat yogurt, or needing a quick snack, nuts can fit any craving you have.

Which Nuts Are The Best To Lower My Cholesterol?
There are a variety of nuts out there, which include pecans, pistachios, and walnuts. While they vary in the amounts of fats they have, some nuts might be more effective in helping to lower your cholesterol.

The Cholesterol Friendly Benefits of Walnuts
Walnuts can be used in a variety of foods -- and are also heart-healthy. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), recognizing the cholesterol-lowering properties of walnuts, accepted a petition filed by the California Walnut Commission in March 2004 to list the health claim that walnuts can aid in reducing cholesterol levels. They still carry this health claim to date.

Can Pistachio Nuts Lower Cholesterol?
Pistachio nuts are a popular snack, and chock-full of nutrients, such as thiamin, potassium, fiber, phytosterols, magnesium and vitamin B6. Research indicates that pistachios also raise your good cholesterol, or HDL.

Pecans and Your Cholesterol
Although pecans mainly affect one type of cholesterol, they also contain unsaturated fats, vitamins and other nutrients -- making them a heart-healthy snack.
