UK Edition

Dear Reader,

More and more studies are linking high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) to obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and liver scarring.

In fact, about this time last year, a study in which rats were fed "normal" levels of HFCS (of course, I'd argue the only "normal" level should be absolutely no HFCS) linked the stuff to one of the biggest killers of our time... Obesity!

Still, the Corn Refiners Association keeps on chugging along, eventually deciding last year to rebrand HFCS as "corn sugar." You see, all the bad press actually started to get to them, and sales started dropping.

But this new approach didn't sit well with sugar farmers. Late last month, "Big Sugar" issued a press release revealing the filing of a law suit against "Big Corn." They don't want the corn processers marketing HFCS "as a 'natural' product equivalent to real sugar."

They're calling it "false advertising," and are calling Big Corn out for "distort[ing] scientific facts." They say Big Corn claims that HFCS is extracted from corn in a simple process and is a natural sugar — and they don't want anybody claiming anything other than plain old sugar is a "natural" sugar. They're looking for damages including money for corrective advertising.

And okay, I agree with them — to a point. The process to create HFCS isn't a simple one, and the result is anything but a natural product. And the statement the Corn Refiners Association sent to consumer watchdog website is downright laughable.

In it, they actually claim that HFCS has a place in healthy foods: "High fructose corn syrup makes many healthy foods palatable and affordable..." They go on to claim that Big Sugar is standing in the way of "consumer clarity about added sugars in the diet."

Yep, you read that right. The Corn Refiners Association is actually claiming to stand up for consumer clarity. I'd like to think this battle couldn't get any more ridiculous, but I know that it will.

How could it not?

I mean, I agree with Big Sugar to a point — their claims against HFCS are valid. But it's a classic case of the pot and the kettle. They can't slap a halo on sugar and a pair of horns on HFCS and call it a day. After all, sugar's a major player in obesity, diabetes and immune system problems — many of the same issues for which HFCS has been in the spotlight.

The bottom line is that anything so refined as HFCS or white sugar can't possibly be healthy... and most certainly can't be called natural! To suggest otherwise, as Big Sugar is attempting, is downright ridiculous.

Maybe the two will end up taking each other out in this fight. I know it will never happen... but one can always dream...

Ringing without bells

Q: In the last few years I have experienced intermittent bouts of tinnitus, which seems also to have caused a partial hearing loss. The tinnitus, especially, has proven to be hard to bear. Do you have any information on how to reverse these conditions or on what may bring them on?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: Zinc, ginkgo, and vitamin B12 have each been found to at least partially reduce tinnitus. You could try taking one at a time or all three at once, depending on how disturbing the tinnitus is.

If you try zinc, use 30 milligrams three times daily for at least four to six months before deciding whether to continue, taper down, or quit (if it isn't helpful.) As larger quantities of zinc can possibly cause a copper deficiency, it's wisest to supplement with approximately two milligrams of copper for every 30 milligrams of zinc.

Ginkgo is a very useful supplement for any of us who are at an age where improved "small blood vessel" circulation anywhere in the body could be helpful. Ginkgo can also be useful to reduce tinnitus. Try 80 milligrams of a "standardized" ginkgo preparation, again for four to six months.

Vitamin B12 has also shown effectiveness against tinnitus. However, for many of us over the age of 50, vitamin B12 is more difficult to absorb than when we were younger. That's why you hear about "vitamin B12 shots," but not B1, B2, or other B vitamin injections.

Fortunately, there's now an over-the-counter oral vitamin B12 preparation (called a "liposomal delivery system") that absorbs better than any other oral B12. It also contains folate, which research has found necessary to balance vitamin B12.

This liposomal B12 with folate is called "Pro-Bone-O" and is available in specialist natural health food stores or from online sources. For at least four to six months, use a ½ dropperfull (1,000 micrograms B12, 1,000 micrograms folate) once daily.
