From Pam Stephan, your Guide to Breast Cancer
Breast cancer, before 1973, was not discussed in public. It wasn't a rare disease, but even after the Swinging Sixties, it was still a taboo topic - until Betty Ford spoke candidly of her mastectomy. Public awareness increased greatly and more women went for breast screenings, inspired by her candor.

Farewell, Betty Ford - Born to be Outspoken
On Tuesday, former First Lady Betty Ford was honored by 3 other wives of presidents in a service at Palm Desert, California. She will be buried in Michigan beside her husband, Gerald Ford. Betty Ford brought breast cancer into the public spotlight when she was diagnosed and treated with a mastectomy just weeks after Ford assumed the Presidency. We remember and thank her for years of service to this country.
