| 18 August 2011 UK Edition | Dear Reader, Millions upon millions of men are on medications for an enlarged prostate.
And every single one of them may have an increased risk of developing an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
Yep, it's one of those classic "cut off your nose to spite your face" scenarios so common to mainstream medicine.
Of course, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is merely calling for new warning labels, suggesting fighting a serious problem (and one that can be treated naturally, of course!) with mere words. Somewhat surprisingly, they are actually cautioning doctors against giving the drugs until other urological conditions are ruled out... though with the other options out there, I wonder why the drugs need to be given at all.
The drugs named in the report include Proscar, Propecia, Avodart, and Jalyn. The report is based on two large trials of prostate cancer drugs. Propecia (which is used to treat hair loss) wasn't actually studied in the trials, but its label is also being updated as it's in the same class of drug as the others (in fact, it's simply a watered down version of Proscar).
Of course, the drug makers are going for the "move along, nothing to see here" method of dealing with this, emphasizing that their drugs are oh-so-safe and have been used for oh-so- long. And in a bit of an ironic twist, GlaxoSmithKline, which makes Avodart, actually used one of these very same trials to support their (failed) attempt to get FDA approval for the drug's use to treat prostate cancer.
As always, Dr. Wright has suggestions for treating an enlarged prostate, and not a single one of them involves a drug.
Getting plenty of essential fatty acids can help prevent an enlarged prostate (they also prevent cardiovascular disease, regulate inflammation, and help maintain soft skin).
He also has found in his practice that men suffering from an enlarged prostate are often deficient in zinc.
He recommends 30 milligrams of zinc (in the picolinate or citrate form) along with 2 milligrams of copper three times a day to start, tapering down the dose as symptoms improve. He also recommends taking 1 tablespoon of fish oil (for its high essential fatty acid content) along with 400 IU of vitamin E each day.

Q: What can I do to boost my recovery after surgery?
Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: My colleague Kerry Bone is very knowledgeable in the field of herbal medicine. Here is his advice:
Immune support is one of the key aspects of improving healing. Major surgery also suppresses natural killer (NK) cell activity. These two factors make Echinacea root the ideal herb to use post-surgically, given what we now know about its ability to boost innate immunity and NK cell production and activity. I recommend between 2.5 and 5 grams of good quality Echinacea root per day, depending on the severity of the surgery and the risk of infection.
But equally important is the use of herbs that promote blood flow and connective tissue production in areas that have been operated on. Grape seed extract has a number of actions related to healing, including the support of connective tissue by protecting collagen and elastin. And in clinical trials, grape seed extract has been shown to support microcirculation and improve capillary resistance. It also improves venous function, reducing oedema (swelling) and improving venous tone, which helps reduce the risk of post- surgical deep vein thrombosis (DVT). I recommend around 100 to 150 mg of grape seed extract per day. There is also clinical evidence that suggests Ginkgo biloba leaf extract helps improve microcirculation. It combines well with grape seed extract, so I typically recommend 100 to 150 mg per day of a 50:1 leaf extract.
