UK Edition

Dear Reader,

What do you do when your experimental cancer drug kills 6 of the patients enrolled in your trial?

You keep on going, that's what!

Phase 2 data of a trial of a new cancer drug from the company Exelixis was released earlier this month. As soon as the data came out, shares of the company fell 20 per cent. But a few deaths and some lost money aren't going to hold them down!

One analyst basically said it was no big deal, pointing out that the 1 per cent rate of treatment-related deaths is "no different from what we have seen for every other Phase 1 and 2 trial at [the American Society of Clinical Oncology.] Wow, way to spin the deaths of these people (again, six people, not one person) into numbers that make you look a-okay.

All of the six deaths were caused by side effects of the drug. Another analyst said that drug safety is of less concern when you're dealing with cancer, but that these deaths could basically cloud their numbers.

To illustrate how great their new drug is, it was reported that it shrank bone malignancies in 76 per cent of prostate cancer patients. Of course, they don't say to what degree. I wonder if it was something like that 1 per cent that doesn't matter when you're talking about the deaths of human beings.

And of course, there is no such tooting of horns for the other kinds of cancer against which the drug has been tested — the patients who died were being treated for breast cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer, and prostate cancer. So, does the benefit outweigh the risk?

This is one of the things that really angers me about mainstream medicine — this whole "having to break a few eggs to make an omelette" mentality people seem to have. They'll wilfully ignore the natural alternative treatments that have been PROVEN safe and effective, and continue to treat human beings as lab rats in the name of scientific advancement, all while pocketing billions of dollars a year for giving people some hope of overcoming disease.

So, of course, they're just going to keep going with their Phase 3 trial. They're looking at lower doses, but are worried that those won't "retain the impressive efficacy seen to date," as noted in a letter to investors. Well, we can't have that. We need those numbers!

Patients will enrol thinking there is nothing else out there for them. Meanwhile, countless real miracles and breakthroughs continue to sit, largely unknown, on the shelves of natural pharmacies and in labs devoted to making a real difference rather than a pay cheque.

D from milk is a "don't"

Q: You write a lot about the importance of getting enough vitamin D. I thought milk was a good source, but you also tell people to stay away from dairy. Could you explain why?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: The food industry began adding vitamin D to milk years ago. It was a cheap way to "protect" the public from deficiency. Unfortunately, it's just not working: Cases of vitamin D deficiency have been skyrocketing over the past several years. Besides, there are so many health problems linked to cow's milk that, as you've read, it's the last thing I'd recommend anyway.

Especially when the best source of vitamin D is even more widely available — not to mention cheaper. Certain wavelengths of sunlight (found in ultraviolet B, or UVB, rays) act on a cholesterol derivative in human skin, starting a chain of reactions, which ultimately produce vitamin D. So if it were possible for you to get enough sun, you wouldn't have to worry about vitamin D. The problem is, hardly anyone does get enough sun these days, which is why supplements are so important. I recommend 4,000 IU ("International Units") daily for adults.
