- 2,000 deaths per year linked to arthritis drugs
Dear Reader,
I knew it was bad, but I didn't know it was this bad.
In previous e-alerts I've warned about the dangers of taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) - over-the-counter painkillers such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen. But just today I was reading over some research about NSAIDs published in the US journal Clinical Cornerstone.
I was appalled to find that over 100,000 hospitalisations per year are attributed to upper gastrointestinal adverse events associated with long-term NSAID use.
But even MORE shocking than this - about 15 per cent of those patients DIE as a result of their adverse reactions.
That's right: An estimated 16,500 deaths in the US alone are directly linked to long-term NSAID use every year.
Here in the UK, scientists at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford claim that the risk of death among long-term NSAID users is about 1 in 2,000. This equates to approximately 2,000 deaths linked to NSAID use a year.
When under-reporting of the cause of death is factored into these figures, this equates roughly to the same number of people who die in road accidents each year.
Yet, while £millions is poured into road safety awareness campaigns, the risks associated with arthritis drugs are swept under the carpet.
News like this makes my blood boil, especially as arthritis sufferers are not being told about safer alternative treatments that are just as effective as pharmaceutical drugs.
