UK Edition

Dear Reader,

Nothing feels quite like a migraine.

I remember whole days spent in bed, curtains drawn tight to keep out the light that felt like it seared straight through my skull. Every sound, every movement brought on waves of pain.

I was so grateful when they just stopped. Around the time I was entering college, I just stopped getting them. But for those of you who still get them — I know your pain.

And I have a possible solution to share.

Researchers at the International Headache Society invited 60 patients who got 2 to 6 migraines per month to join their trial investigating a natural migraine therapy.

Over the course of the study, 221 attacks were treated with either a sublingual combination of ginger and feverfew or a placebo.

Feverfew is already known as an anti-inflammatory pain fighter. In combination with ginger (also known to e-Tips readers for its many health benefits), it was enough to stop pain in two hours in 63 per cent of those who took it. In fact, 32 per cent were completely pain-free at that point. In comparison, only 16 per cent of those taking the placebo got rid of the pain.

Patients taking the feverfew/ginger combination also rated their pain as less severe on a 4-point sale. For the most part, the treatment didn't cause any side effects — the most common ones were mouth numbness and nausea.

In clinical trials, NO migraine treatment, even the "best" pharmaceutical offerings, does any better than provide relief in about 40 per cent of cases after two hours. . So these results are pretty big for migraine sufferers.

The treatment was given during the "mild headache" stage of the migraine attack, which often comes before the moderate or severe headache that leaves you knocked out.

This trial used a specific brand of the feverfew and ginger combo, called LipiGesic. The same company also makes a treatment for acute migraine attacks.

Just eight drops a day for sweet relief

Q: Is there anything I can do to get rid of my fibrocystic breast disease and ovarian cysts?

Dr Jonathan V. Wright: I generally recommend a formula made up of iodide and potassium, called SSKI, for fibrocystic breasts and ovarian cysts. Eight drops in a glass of water daily usually works in a matter of just two to five months. There's one important thing you need to remember though: High doses of iodine or iodide can sometimes reduce thyroid function.

Fortunately, the thyroid gland is very resilient and almost always completely recovers once you stop taking the iodide or iodine. I've hardly ever seen this happen in women using SSKI for the problems you're having, but it's still best to have your thyroid function checked periodically whenever you're using it — just to be on the safe side. SSKI (potassium iodide) is available online or from specialist health food stores.
