Yoga introduces a mindfulness to stretching, so that you pay attention to your alignment and how the position really feels in your body. Here is a sequence of ten poses that look simple but will stretch and strengthen your major muscle groups. | Yoga Poses for Beginners Beginners' poses start to establish basic strength and flexibility throughout the whole body. These include standing poses, seated and supine stretches, and introductory backbends and balancing poses. | Is Yoga Just Stretching? Although yoga involves stretching your muscles, it is a whole different ballgame than the few warm-up stretches you might do at the gym. | Pose of the Week - Plank Pose At this time of year, when the holiday hustle is on and the cold weather settles in, I often feel torn between wanting a gentle, nurturing restorative practice to sooth my jangled nerves and needing a kick-butt workout to stoke the fire in my belly. This week's pose caters to the later desire: a nice, long hold in plank pose.
