UK Edition

Dear Reader,

Reading as much health news as I do every day, you'd think I'd get used to the ridiculous viewpoints seen in the mainstream. Instead, I often find myself going through the following chain of events:

1. Read headline. 2. Groan. 3. Laugh. 4. Read article. 5. Bang head against wall.

This time, the chain was in reaction to an article entitled, "Peppermint Earns Respect in Mainstream Medicine."

Of course, the headline made me groan at the thought of the mainstream finally giving its blessing to peppermint, which has been a staple of naturopathic medicine for years.

The first line is even more groan-worthy, noting that Australian researchers at the University of Adelaide have shown "for the first time" how peppermint benefits people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Years and years of real-world proof (and numerous trials) to back up peppermint's amazing pain fighting abilities? Sorry — not good enough. They wanted a clinical trial showing why it works. Fine. But what took you so long?

And the next reaction is laughter, to think of how far behind the mainstream has fallen thanks to their obsession with shiny, new, and expensive pharmaceuticals. Case in point — with the "new" proof of how peppermint reduces inflammatory pain associated with IBS, the reaction of the researchers was to say that this could be "the first step in determining a new type of mainstream clinical treatment for [IBS]."

Umm. We already have an excellent treatment. Good old peppermint. But of course that's not enough for the mainstream — I'm sure someone's already hard at work on some synthetic peppermint-ish pill.

Finally, while the content of the article is helpful (it's always good to get the word out, even if it's couched in ridiculousness), these sorts of stories always get me thinking about what an uphill battle it is to convince people of the power of natural medicine. This, of course, leads to the aforementioned head banging.

Don't get me wrong. Any support is good. But it just gets a little ridiculous when I read articles proclaiming that some natural substance or another is a powerful healer — I mean, how many times can a person yell, "We know!" at his computer?

At first sniffle

Q: I've seen the light and am restocking my medicine cabinet with natural products. What should I have on hand for fighting off colds?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: At the very first sign of a cold, I recommend taking a minimum of 1 gram of vitamin C four times daily, and if the vitamin C is tolerated well (meaning it doesn't cause loose bowels or diarrhoea), considerably more is safe and even more effective.

Next to vitamin C, one of the most effective germ- and infection-fighting treatments available is something that I covered in detail in previous issues of Nutrition & Healing. You might recognize it by its more common name, colloidal silver, but I prefer to use a slightly more technical name, nano-particulate silver. The nano-particulate part is very important because the smaller the particle size of the silver, the greater the germicidal effect.

Unlike vitamin C, nano-particulate silver should not be used every day (unless recommended for a very particular reason by a doctor skilled and knowledgeable in nutritional and natural medicine), but reserved only for treatment of active infections.
Bear in mind we are not addressing anyone's personal situation and you should rely on this for informational purposes only. Please consult with your own doctor before acting on any recommendations contained herein.

Wishing you the best of health,
