| | Apparently during a keynote address at the Mobile World Congress yesterday Google CEO Eric Schmidt asked, in response to a question about mobile health, "Why isn't your phone in charge of your health?" I read this from the twitter stream of Jenna Wortham, a NYT tech reporter, so the comment is completely out of context for me, but even if it sort of means what I think it does, it's a classically frightening proposition. Simply put, if the phones are in charge of our health, who is in charge of the phones. Us? The "users" (as we're affectionally referred to)? Doctors? Tech companies? There's lots of great health content online, and even more bad content. But neither will ever be a replacement for care, something phones can only be imbued with, not initiate. Researchers (see 2nd article below) recently had a look at how accurate sexual health messages were in textbooks for high school students. Their findings were not encouraging. The idea that there are truths about sexual health and that if only we all had access to the information we need, we'd be fine, is a gigantic misunderstanding of the state of health information and the realities of human behavior. There are few absolutes in sexual health, and our actions, be it going to the hospital when we think we're having a heart attack or putting a condom on when we're about to have intercourse, are far from predictable or logical. We live in the gray zone, which may be why so many of us are willing to pay $4.99 for an app that promises clarity. ~ Cory | | Lies We're Told About Sex Nine of the most pernicious lies we're told about sex, and a few counter proposals. | Are Textbooks to Be Believed?
