Want to relieve arthritis pain without having to resort to risky patent medicines?
Researchers have confirmed a programme that could do just that — and it works for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia.
As an added bonus, it could also relieve fatigue and improve your balance and sense of well being.
I'll warn you, though — it's not quite as simple as taking a supplement — this one requires you to get out there and get a little active. But if you're willing to put in a little work, the rewards could be very great indeed.
A group of US researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine recently wrapped up the largest study to date of the Arthritis Foundation's Tai Chi programme.
They found that there was significant benefit for people with all types of arthritis. Over eight weeks, participants went to twice-weekly Tai Chi classes. Their progress was compared with that of a control group made of people who did not take the classes until after the evaluation period.
At the end of the eight weeks, the people who had taken the classes showed moderate improvements in pain and stiffness, as well as fatigue. They also had improved balance and an increased sense of well being.
Oh, and if you're concerned about mobility issues, don't worry — participants didn't have to perform Tai Chi standing. They could participate in the study — and experienced improvement — even if they performed Tai Chi sitting.

Q: My son and daughter-in-law have been trying to start a family for the past three years with no success. Their insurance won't cover fertility treatments and they can't afford them on their own. Is there any natural method that might be able to help?
Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: Unfortunately, your son and daughter-in-law aren't alone: Infertility is on the rise — and has been for decades. Many couples are spending tens of thousands a year on specialized testing and procedures in their quests to have babies. Ironically, there's been a safe treatment available in local natural health food stores since the 1940s that costs very little and was found effective in one trial in up to 75 per cent of women who tried it!
This safe, frequently effective remedy is para-aminobenzoic acid, or PABA, often classified as a member of the B-vitamin complex. In the 1940s, Dr. Benjamin Sieve published results from research involving 16 women, all of whom had been unable to achieve pregnancy for over five years. All 16 women took 100 milligrams of PABA four times daily for three to seven months. Twelve of the 16 became pregnant. And since I began recommending this treatment in the 1970s, I've observed PABA to be effective for over 50 per cent of the women who've tried it.
