UK Edition

Dear Reader,

One thing you can say with certainty about China...it's pretty big.

Oh, and from the point of view of many industries, including Big Pharma, it's also pretty cheap too.

There are hundreds of Big Pharma sites in China — by the end of 2009 there were already more than 700, with Pfizer alone having 137.

Cheap research (Eli Lilly recently announced they're opening a diabetes research centre in Shanghai) and cheap manufacturing... could it get any better?

Oh yes, it could. In fact, China could be part of a new "wild west," where anything goes and there's nobody to answer to.

But there is somebody, right? After all, doesn't the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) keep tabs on these companies no matter where they are? Aren't they still in control?

Oh, sure. They're there. All TWO of them.

That's right — the FDA has only two inspectors in all of China (and another two in India, another favourite for overseas business). Two inspectors for nearly one thousand sites.

In a recent report, they even admitted they just can't keep up. In fact, in 2009, the FDA only managed to inspect 11 per cent of foreign factories — and that was with the help of 15 US-based inspectors.

Great — so we can look forward to more stories like the contaminated heparin that poisoned hundreds of people in 2008. Taking patent drugs is such an adventure!

Of course, you know how we at Nutrition & Healing feel: Even if there was an FDA inspector for every drug site in China, that wouldn't take away the too-close relationship between Big Pharma and the FDA.

But it certainly serves to illustrate the complete lack of oversight and concern for our health, doesn't it?

An essential test for heavy metal toxicity

Q: I've read about heavy metal toxicity in several health publications, but when my doctor tested my blood, the results were negative. Does this mean I'm in the clear and don't need to worry about heavy metals?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: Unfortunately, the blood tests used by most mainstream doctors are virtually useless (except in cases of acute exposures) for identifying heavy metals that are stored away in your body.

That's because toxic metals such as lead are rapidly cleared from the bloodstream so that they won't continue to circulate and damage cells over and over again. Although our bodies were designed to be able to excrete tiny amounts of heavy metals through the kidneys and liver into the gastrointestinal tract, they simply can't handle the enormous amounts generated by industrialization.

And when those relatively large amounts can't be excreted, they're rapidly taken out of the bloodstream and dumped into other tissues, including (but not limited to) bone, brain, and lymphatic tissue. It's this tissue build-up of metals that's so detrimental to your body.

Instead of a blood test, doctors should be administering a chelation test, something that is very closely related to chelation therapy. In a chelation test, a single dose of a chelating agent is given intravenously. These chelating agents chemically lock onto toxic metals — not just in the bloodstream, but wherever they find them. The toxic metal/chelating agent complex is then eliminated in the urine and stool (though most doctors prefer to test only the urine because it's easier and less expensive).

So after the infusion has been given, all of the urine produced over the next six hours is collected and sent off to a laboratory for toxic metal testing. If high levels of toxic metals are found with a chelation test, then the best course of action is to get chelation therapy.
