UK Edition

Dear Reader,

I wasn't really familiar with beetroot until this year, when I joined a farm share programme and got a chance to try all kinds of produce I'd never had in my kitchen before.

After consulting a few different recipes, I decided to go for something simple — I roasted the beetroot in the oven with a little olive oil and sea salt.

And, oh boy, were they good.

I don't have them very often, but I might want to change that. Because little did I know, as I was making my delicious discovery, I was also taking a step that could possibly help to save my brain.

At Wake Forest University's Translational Science Centre, researchers focused on ageing recently turned their attention to beetroot. Well, beet juice specifically.

Why? Beet juice is rich in nitrate, which our bodies turn into nitrite, which in turn can improve blood flow by helping to open blood vessels.

The researchers say that nitrite is particularly beneficial because it targets the places in the body that have the greatest need for increased oxygen.

So why is this so good for the brain? Certain areas of the brain get less oxygen as we age — this decrease has been linked with dementia and poor mental performance. A boost in blood flow gets more oxygen to your noggin, which can keep your mind sharp and maybe even protect against dementia.

With this news, beetroot might just have earned a place on the super foods list! They've certainly earned a permanent place in my kitchen.

Nitrates are also found in high concentrations in celery, cabbage, and leafy greens.

Eliminate sebaceous cysts

Q: I keep getting white heads called sebaceous cysts on my face and have had some removed surgically by a dermatologist. What causes them, and how can I get rid of them?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: While I can't tell you exactly what causes sebaceous cysts, I can tell you what has helped many of my patients eliminate them. These cysts are filled with a semi-solid, semi-liquid, oily ("sebaceous") material that can be dissolved with a combination of SSKI, a saturated solution of potassium iodide, and DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide).

I typically recommend mixing an ounce or two of each together (initially the mixture will become very warm, but it will cool off in two to three minutes), then rubbing a few drops of the SSKI/DMSO mixture vigorously into the sebaceous cyst at least twice daily. Be patient — you usually won't see any results for several weeks, but if you persist, there's an excellent chance the sebaceous cyst will disappear over the course of a few months.

Keep in mind that the SSKI/DMSO solution won't work on cysts that are filled with something other than sebaceous material. It also won't work on lipomas, which are benign tumours made up of solid fats.

SSKI, which is sold by the name "Tri-Quench" (Scientific Botanicals, Seattle) and DMSO are both available through some natural health food stores. SSKI is also available by prescription.

One caution: Continuous use of SSKI (or iodine) can potentially slow thyroid function in a few sensitive individuals. So, as always, be sure to work with a physician skilled and knowledgeable in natural and nutritional medicine if you decide to use SSKI against sebaceous cysts.
