Coping and Support

From Marcia Purse, your Guide to Bipolar Disorder
The winter holidays are always stressful for me. Over the years I've had to cope with my fiance's death on December 17, and then later my mother's death on the 19th; there have been issues with anger, mixed episodes, and this year especially, lack of money. This week I offer you a resource for all kinds of holiday issues that will give you a head start on keeping the stress levels down.

Help for the Holidays
Gathered from all over About.com Health, wisdom and tips to help you get through the upcoming winter holidays more easily. From anxiety disorders to fibromyalgia, from alcoholism to allergies, from grief to gluten-free, and much, much more, find information you need now so you can plan ahead for getting through what can be a very stressful period of time.

Vincent van Gogh - Half Crazy
"It is only too true that a lot of artists are mentally ill - it's a life which, to put it mildly, makes one an outsider," said Vincent van Gogh. "I'm all right when I completely immerse myself in work, but I'll always remain half crazy." Read about this exceptional but tortured artist.

This Disturbs Me...
A mental hospital has to close, leaving the state scrambling to find places to take care of 51 seriously ill patients - but there's no place really suitable. If they create a new facility with only 30 beds, how is that going to fill the need?

Mood Swings - And Swings - And Swings
Six weeks after I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, I wrote, "I'm experiencing hypomania, depression, and an angry mixture all in a day, sometimes more than once each. And behind these mini-moodswings, the base mood has shifted, over the course of a few weeks, from depression, to a good balance, and back into depression again." Continue to follow my journey from diagnosis onward.
