From Elizabeth Woolley, your Guide to Type 2 Diabetes
I admit I crave sweets often. I also know I need to keep them in check. Today I am sharing my favorite strategies as well as a couple of diabetes-friendly sweet foods that are not well-known but I personally find tasty and helpful.

My Favorite Strategies for Dealing with Sweets
Got a hankering for something sweet? When you have type 2 diabetes, your best bet is to abstain, but sometimes the craving is strong or you feel left out of festivities and celebrations. Our bodies may be wired for craving carbohydrates, and we have to learn how to handle that in a smart way. Sweets for diabetics don't have to be banned. Here are some ideas to help you satisfy that craving while maintaining control.

Mesquite Meal Benefits
Mesquite meal or flour is made from the dried seed pods of the mesquite tree, a common tree in the American Southwest. In fact, the tree and its pods were an important food staple of the Native Americans, who would grind them to make sweet flour that could be used for soups, drinks, puddings, porridge, and dried cakes. It has been found that mesquite meal helps to lower and stabilize blood glucose levels, making this a diabetes superfood. Learn more about mesquite meal.

Benefits of Tamarind
Tamarind has been a long-time folk remedy with a long list of uses, including treatment of sore throats and sun stroke. It may also have antibiotic properties. Animal studies have shown that tamarind can lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels. However, studies on humans have yet to confirm this. While it hasn't been proven to be a diabetes superstar, it has a wonderful sweet flavor that can be used sparingly to add some variety to a diabetes diet.

Mesquite Flour Pinole Recipe
Think of pinole as the grandfather of energy drinks. This is a traditional Native-American recipe using mesquite meal. Some traditional recipes can be considered bland and are unfamiliar in taste, but this is a simple way to get to know and experiment with this beneficial superfood for diabetes.
