In her address at the 2010 conference of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Kay Redfield Jamison said that lithium is prescribed less than it should be because it's inexpensive, and all too often drug companies are still paying kickbacks to doctors for prescribing their more expensive mood stabilizers. If she's right, it's a shame, as lithium has been shown to work well for both mania and depression. And if you or someone you care about is taking lithium, it is essential to be aware of potential problems.
