Dear Reader,

Big Pharma's tactic for preventing or slowing osteoporosis seems like some kind of bizarre and cruel joke — the very drugs they offer to protect your bones can actually do the opposite. Some women hoping to strengthen their bones instead see their jawbones practically melt away due to bone necrosis brought on by the drugs.

So, it's no surprise that we're always on the lookout for natural ways to prevent osteoporosis. Because I don't know about you, but I'm staying as far away as possible from the poisons masquerading as medicine.

Luckily, natural aids in keeping bones strong and healthy are being discovered and confirmed every day. The latest one couldn't be cheaper or easier. In fact, you probably already have some in your medicine cabinet.

I'm talking about one of our favourites here at Nutrition & Healing: omega-3 fatty acids.

Whether from fish oil or flax oil, omega-3 fatty acids could reduce osteoporosis by an incredible 50 per cent, as shown in a study published in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage.

Granted, this is a study that was conducted on Guinea pigs, but it's extremely promising. It turns out that Guinea pigs happen to be an excellent model for naturally occurring osteoporosis.

In the study, a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids significantly reduced early symptoms of osteoporosis, and there was strong evidence that the omega-3s alter the actual biochemistry of the disease. This alteration helps to prevent as well as to slow osteoporosis.

In fact, the researchers are speculating that omega-3s could be used as a treatment for the disease. They say fish oil is more effective, which is right in line with Dr. Wright's recommendations.

Good sources of omega-3s are dark meat fish, but these may also contain mercury. A better choice for those concerned about mercury in fish, or who don't enjoy eating fish, are fish oil supplements.

Q: I was reading an article on the Veri-chip device being implanted in Alzheimer's patients and the lack of medical privacy that they could face as a result. This made me wonder what is actually in my own medical records. How do I obtain a copy of my information?

Dr Jonathan V. Wright: Having a comprehensive record of your own medical history is a good idea and can be helpful, especially in an emergency or in the event of a hospitalization, or even if you just switch doctors.

Actually getting the information usually isn't difficult: In most cases, all you have to do is fill out a request form provided by the receptionist at your doctor's office and they should be able to send you a copy of your records within a few days. (You may be asked to pay for your copies.)

Once you obtain your records, don't be shy about asking for clarification if you don't understand everything that is in them. It is important that you be knowledgeable about your own health and a good way to begin is by having a clear understanding of what is contained within your own files.
Bear in mind we are not addressing anyone's personal situation and you should rely on this for informational purposes only. Please consult with your own physician before acting on any recommendations contained herein.
