Dear Reader,

Usually, reading mainstream news gets me feeling pretty depressed. But one recent article in particular left me feeling more distressed than usual.

The article details the ways in which tinnitus — characterized by a constant ringing or screeching or hissing in a person's ears — can ruin lives, leading to insomnia and depression. In fact, the article says, living with this constant noise has led people with tinnitus to think about suicide — and some people to actually go through with it.

The fact that some people find escape from tinnitus only through suicide is extremely sad. But what had me feeling especially distressed is that this is yet another example of how ignoring natural and alternative health solutions is ruining (and ending) people's lives.

And that's pretty much the end of it, isn't it? If there's not a patented drug for it, it's "incurable." Any natural options go completely ignored — even when it means keeping people hopeless. That's why it is painfully clear that ignoring natural medicine isn't doing anyone any favours.

There might not be a 100 per cent cure for tinnitus, but Nature offers many things that can reduce the symptoms — and often eliminate them entirely. Dr. Wright and the Nutrition & Healing team have covered these options in numerous e-Tips.

Among the possible sources of relief — or even elimination — are the following:

• Ginkgo biloba, 80 milligrams of a standardized preparation, three times daily

• Zinc (picolinate) 30 milligrams twice daily, "offset" with 2 milligrams copper, twice daily

• Vitamin B12, 1,000 micrograms injected once or twice weekly, along with 5 milligrams of folic acid each time. However, B12 injections can only be administered by a doctor skilled in natural therapies.

85% of Cancers are Entirely Avoidable

*** The World Health Organisation (WHO) has revealed that 85 per cent of adult cancers are entirely avoidable and, of these, around half are related to nutritional deficiencies in the Western diet.

*** A Brigham Young University study found that a combination of 30 minutes of cardio exercise a day along with a switch to a healthier diet dropped the participants' health risks for:

  • diabetes

  • cancer

  • and heart disease dramatically in just 6 weeks!

  • ..And that's just generally eating well...

In this groundbreaking 267-page book, you will discover how adding the power of individual and specific foods to your diet can have a dramatic effect on your life and your health.
    Say "neigh" to varicose veins

Q: I just turned 30, and I noticed I'm getting varicose veins. Are they dangerous? Should I be worried?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: Varicose veins may be painful sometimes, but are generally harmless. But you may be able to slow down their progression considerably.

Horse chestnut is a herbal remedy that has proven very useful for relieving the symptoms and slowing the progression of varicose veins. According to Medline Plus, horse chestnut seed extract (HCSE) is widely used in Europe for chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a syndrome that may include leg swelling, varicose veins, leg pain, itching, and skin ulcers. Although HCSE is traditionally recommended for a variety of medical conditions, CVI is the only condition for which there is strong supportive scientific evidence. You can find horse chestnut seed extract at your local natural health food store.

Although some worry that varicose veins may lead to abnormal clotting — sometimes called "deep vein thrombosis" — this complication is quite unusual except with trauma or long periods of inactivity, such as long flights on airlines.

Fortunately, guarding against this is simple, and has many other health benefits. Use one tablespoonful of cod liver oil or other fish oil daily. This reduces any tendency you may have towards abnormal clotting (as well as reducing your over-all risk of cardiovascular disease in general). Fish oil should always be accompanied by the "mixed tocopherol" form of vitamin E.
