Dear Reader,

Have you been avoiding black cohosh because of mainstream reports of liver damage?

Well, you can breathe easier (and add it to your shopping list!), because a new research review says, there's no evidence that the herbal menopause management wonder is to blame for liver problems.

The mainstream may have tried to keep it down, pushing dangerous hormone replacement therapy instead (opening countless women up to risks like heart attack, breast cancer, and stroke), but it was only a matter of time until the truth came out.

Over the years, a small number of black cohosh users have experienced liver inflammation and liver failure. These reports have caused many women to shy away from the treatment, and even resulted in some countries slapping warning labels on any products containing the herb.

But there's a small detail about those reports that seems to have been overlooked.

The women's doctors, in most cases, were completely unable to account for a couple of crucial details: the women's drinking habits as well as any use of liver-harming medications. Curious, isn't it?

Well, this half-reporting of the "dangers" of black cohosh will hopefully be coming to an end.

A new study reported in the journal Menopause looked at five clinical trials of a black cohosh product (Remifemin). Overall, 1,100 women participated in the studies.

Out of those 1,100, 88 women dropped out of the studies. Not a single one dropped out because of liver damage.

And there was zero evidence that black cohosh posed any danger to the liver. In fact, out of all those women 37 had abnormally high levels of the liver enzyme AST before beginning the trials. Their levels actually dropped to within normal range during the black cohosh therapy!

So if you've been concerned by the mainstream claims that black cohosh will harm your liver, this should ease your worries.

With vitamins, try to keep it natural

Q: Sometimes shopping for vitamins is just too confusing, and I never feel like I'm picking the right thing. I thought I was good, but then heard that the human body only recognizes vitamins made from natural sources. Is that true? Do I have to do all of my shopping again?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: The body recognizes just about any substance you put into it. The real question is what's best for you.

Ideally, I would tell you to take vitamin supplements and other nutrients concentrated only from natural sources. Vitamins (and minerals) in nature are almost always found in conjunction with other vitamins, minerals, and metabolic co- factors — vitamin C with a variety of flavonoids, for example. Since there's considerable "unity in nature," if vitamins are found with other nutrients in their natural form, it's very likely that they all work together in your body.

But unfortunately, our world is far from ideal, so, while the naturally concentrated forms of vitamins might be the best option, you shouldn't totally avoid synthetics. In many instances, they're the only sources of the higher doses your body may sometimes need.
